When the second season ofJujutsu Kaisenwas released, Gege Akutami built a bad reputation for killing some of the major characters from the series. From Kugisaki Nobara to Toji Fushiguro, Akutami took away multiple fan-favorite characters that made fans ofJujutsu Kaisenhate them a lot.

Nanami in Jujutsu Kaisen

While the deaths of these characters were certainly depressing, none of them compares to the tragic demise of Kento Nanami, the grade 1 sorcerer for Jujutsu High. Namani was one of the most popular characters in the history of anime, as not only fans but even prominent manga creators like Tite Kubo developed a love for the character.

His death still hauntsJujutsu Kaisenfans, and while Akutami was not able to bring him back, they did have an explanation for his death. The mangaka recently revealed that they killed Kubo’s favoriteJujutsu Kaisencharacter because of their loyalty to the readers of the manga, and there was a scenario where Nanami could have died much earlier in the story.

Gege Akutami’s Plan for Kento Nanami’s Death

During theJujutsu Kaisenexhibition in Shibuya, Tokyo, Akutami was asked about Mahito and Itadori’s fight and what the mangaka’s thought process was while drawing the epic battle. Their answer was shared by@f9x00. Akutami explained that the trigger of Mahito and Yuji Itadori’s fight in the Shibuya arc was Kento Nanami’s death in episode 18 of season 2.

Akutami stated:

I had decided long ago that Itadori and Mahito would settle their fight in the Shibuya arc, and that Nanami would die as the trigger for this battle. This idea was present from the early planning stages of the Shibuya arc. The fact that Nanami remained in the story up until this point already held significant meaning. Although he was a favorite character of mine, I felt that not having him exit here would betray the readers.

According to the mangaka, they planned the confrontation between Itadori and Mahito before the beginning of the Shibuya arc. Thus, they planned to kill Nanami long before the arc started. Akutami believed that ifthey did not remove Nanami from the storyat this point, it would betray the readers, as the plot of the arc needed to move forward.

Even Nobara’s Death Was Planned Ahead

While talking about the tragic deaths in Shibuya,Gege Akutamipointed out that, along with Nanami, they decided onNobara’s death in the seasonas well. However, the mangaka gave Nobara a moment to shine as a major character when she was able to dominate in her battle against Mahito and almost kill the cursed spirit.

The same goes for Kugisaki. I had decided on her departure at this point as well, but only after allowing her to shine. From the moment I decided to write a dark story, I have been committed to ‘seeing it through to the end.’

Both Nobara and Nanami’s deaths not only became the trigger for Yuji and Mahito’s fight but also gave Akutami the correct moment to begin the dark phase ofJujutsu Kaisen.
