The Switch Axe is a weapon thatcan switch between two modes, Axe Mode and Sword Mode. In Axe form,it has better reach. Meanwhile, the Sword form features faster attacks and deals more damage.
The Switch Axe includes three charge bars:

Monster Hunter Wilds: 7 Best Primary & Secondary Weapon Combinations
Two is always better than one.
Best Switch Axe Combos
Players can pull off some pretty sweet combos with the Switch Axe, leading to maximum damage and knocking the monster off its feet.
Executing combos can be pretty tricky, due to the Switch Axe being two weapons. But once you master switching between the two, it’s one of thebest weapons in the game.

We attached video examples of some of the best combos for the Switch Axe in the following sections.
At the top of each video, you’re able to find the button inputs for each combo.

Wild Swing
First off, we have the Wild Swing combo, which is done simply byrepeatedly pressing the circle button while in Axe mode.
This move is easy to pull off and is great when the monster is on the ground, allowing you to continuously deal damage before it gets back up.
Fade into Forward Slash
The Fade into Forward Slash attack is aperfect combo to dodge an attack first, and then lunge to punish the monsteronce the attack misses.
Timing this right will save you from getting hit, while also dealing high damage to the enemy.
Wild Swing into Heavy Slam
One of my favorite combos is the Wild Swing into Heavy Slam.
Repeatedly pressing the circle button to execute a Wild Swing in Axe Mode and then pressing Triangle willslam the axe down hard, possibly leading to knocking the monster down.
Morph Slash into Elemental Overdrive
The strongest combo for the Switch Axe is Morph Slash into Elemental Overdrive.
Once you have filled the gauge bar to its max, executing this attack willresult in an explosion that deals damage in the high hundreds.
Sweep Slash
Lastly, we have the Sweep Slash combo.
This move isgreat for players who are targeting multiple body partsfor materials, as it will hit multiple points on the monster’s body.
Tips for the Switch Axe
Understanding the best Switch Axe combos is a good start, but we have some crucial tips for this weapon that will make you deadlier againstMonster Hunter Wilds' monsters.
Let’s discuss some recommendations on how to become a better Switch Axe user.
The Majority of Hunts Should be in Axe Mode
While Sword Mode may feel great to play and deals more damage, it has limited use and relies too much on the Green Bar.
In this case, you want toswitch to Axe Mode whenever the Green Bar is about to be depleted(which happens a lot), so you can keep the red bar filled and sword’s damage high.
Continuously attack with the Axe to fill the Green Bar back up and then return to Sword form.

Use Decorations that Increase Switch Axe’s Strengths
While the Switch Axe is fantastic by default, it can be made even stronger if you attach the right elements to it andequip the proper decorations.
Going off the explosion attack (Elemental Overdrive) that the weapon can execute, you canincrease explosion damage by adding Blastas a Status Effect. There’s not one monster in the game that is resistant to Blast.
8 Best Greatswords in Monster Hunter Wilds
It’s all about those sweet damage numbers.
As for decorations, you want to equip ones that will helpincrease Blast buildup and attack powerandfill the weapon gauge up faster.
Below are my recommendations:
A Blast Switch Axe build is what got me through my entireMonster Hunter Wildsplaythrough.
If you’re an element fan, then feel free to swap out Blast for Dragon, which is an element that most monsters are weak against.
Use Sword Mode to Destroy Tails
The best part about the Switch Axe is that it has a razor sharp sword, making it theperfect weapon to chop off monsters' tails. This is a huge plus considering tails have some of the rarest monster material in the game.
The best way to go about this is to target the tail through Axe Mode, destroy standard ortempered woundsto weaken the monster, and then switch to Sword mode and attempt to cut the tail off when the monster is on its last legs.
Even when the monster is weak, it can still take a while for the tail to come off, but eventually it will slice off, allowing you to carve it.
