Modern Family‘s Alex Dunphy once encounteredSVU‘s own Olivia Benson. Ariel Winter appeared inSeason 21 Episode 2ofLaw & Order: SVU, titledThe Darkest Journey Home. The episode had a lot of nuances when it came to presenting its victim Raegan, played by Winter. Needless to say, it was much darker than her popular role in the sitcom.

Winter, who had been a lifelong fan ofSVU, immediately jumped at the chance to portray the character. She shared that after eleven seasons on one of TV’s most popular sitcoms, she believed that she could easily transition from Alex to Raegan. However, it was difficult for her as she revealed she wanted to do right by Raegan and do the best job that she could.

She goes out, she drinks, she’s tried drugs, she can embellish the truth sometimes.”However, Winter shared that her character was in no way a malicious person.

In this episode, Winter’s Raegan goes out partying one night and blacks out. When she wakes up, she realizes that she was s*xually assaulted but she doesn’t seem to remember anything from the night before. It is up to Mariska Hargitay’s Captain Olivia Benson and team to help this girl. As the team uses a new technique to make Raegan remember things, they also learn more about their victim through their investigation.
Winter shared that she felt“honored to be playing a role that is changing a narrative”when it comes tohow victims’ backstories impact r*pe cases. The actress shared that a victim shouldn’t be judged based on how they“embellished something completely different in their life”or that they partied the same night as their attack. Winter shared with EW:

Nobody deserves to be s*xually assaulted, ever, at any time, anywhere. It doesn’t matter what your circumstance is. It is very moving for me, and I think it will be for a lot of people, to see that, because it doesn’t matter what you’ve done previously. None of that means that you deserve to be assaulted in any way.
Ariel Winter revealed during the interview that she was a huge fan of the franchise and knew what she was getting into beforehand. She shared that she had seen every episode and knew what type of content the show created. Moreover, she had guidance from none other than Hargitay.

Winter also shared that Hargitay gave her incredible advice. In the show, Winter’s character spent many one-on-one scenes with Hargitay’s character. One piece of advice Hargitay wanted to give her was that she“needed to let go.”Winter shared:
And one thing [Mariska] said to me is that I needed to let go. I needed to be in the moment there, and I needed to take out the acting and just be human. […] And that was something that really stuck with me, and sticks with me now after I left. Letting go just of that fear of doing wrong, fear of not doing the best that you may. That’s something that was really fantastic to be pushed on.
