Back in May 2023, Bungie announced that the studio is developing another game outside of the Destiny 2 franchise, and it was none other than the studio’s dormant IP, Marathon. Since the announcement, the studio has refrained from sharing more info about it, but that changes today.

In a new Developer Update, Bungie talks about the in-development extraction shooter, as game director Joe Ziegler shares some new gameplay info, and we even get to see two new Runner types shown.

Bungie Gives An Update on Marathon After Over A Year Of Silence

In the video, Ziegler mentions how Marathon is a “re-engagement” of the idea of an extraction shooter. There are two Runner classes shown (images not gameplay), and they have the working codenames of “Thief” and “Stealth.” While Bungie refrained from going into anythingtoospecific, the studio did mention how these Runners are character platforms that players will utilize in each “Run.” While the video is over nine-minutes long, it really doesn’t divulge anything much other than to remind us that hey, Marathonstillexists.

Ex-COD Dev Working With Sony & Bungie On New IP

The master of CoD zombies is back, but on a different team.

While Bungie is known for the Destiny franchise first and foremost nowadays, the studio actually released Marathon first. Back in 1994, Bungie released Marathon as a first-person shooter for the Apple Macintosh. The sci-fi shooter takes place several centuries into the future in outer space, and has the player attempting to stop an alien invasion aboard a colony ship named the Marathon.

Marathon Pre-Orders Willl Arrive In 2025

Earlier this month, Destiny 2 update version 8.1.0 seems to have revealed that Marathon’s pre-orders will start in 2025according to dataminers, which could mean that Marathon will be released sometime next year. Of course, this doesn’t factor in game delays, which is something we wouldn’t be surprised to hit Marathon, given it’s a live service title that has a lot of moving parts.

Speaking of, it’s a tricky time to talk about anything live service related when Sony – the parent company of Bungie – is involved, as the latest effort by the PlayStation division to penetrate the lucrative market saw the release of Concord. If you’re unaware of what Concord is, it’s Firewalk Studios' debut game for Sony Interactive Entertainment, which was a colossal failure that saw its servers shut down in less than a month from release, withSony offering full refunds to players.

Here’s to hoping Marathon fares better, and with Bungie’s years upon years of live service experience backing this game up, we’re expecting nothing less.
