The Joe Rogan Experienceis the GOAT when it comes to podcasts. With over 2000 episodes to its name, it has never failed to entertain its audience for the past few years. The podcast can be a number of things – entertaining, funny, or downright controversial and offending – depending on how you look at it.

In a recent episode ofJRE,Joe Rogan touched on the topic of they/them pronouns when he brought up Sam Smith’s viral interview moment with BBC. There, Sam Smith admitted their love for fishing and revealed that they would love to be a“fisherthem.”Coming back to the podcast, Joe Rogan clearly thinks this was one of the most hilarious and absurd things he has ever heard.
Sam Smith on Wanting to be a Fisherthem
Back in September 2019,Sam Smithrevealed to the world that they would be going by they/them pronouns“after a lifetime of being at war”with their gender.
TheUnholysinger added that while they realize that they’ll be misgendered a lot in the times to come, all they want is for people to try and see them for who they are.

Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM ❤ after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out…pic.twitter.com/IVoLTYbAWd
Earlier last year, Smith appeared for an interview on BBC’sThe One Showwhere they revealed their love for fishing. They then added,“I do love fishing, yes, I do. Yeah, yeah, I’d love to be a fisherthem.”

When Alex Jones used the most common term for the job,“fisherman,”by asking if they’d be a fly fisherman, Smith didn’t go out of their way to correct her. Rather, they just continued using the term, fisherthem. They replied,“I’d be any time of fisherthem. I think I would like to, one day I’d just like to end my days fishing.”

Of course, Jones wasn’t looking for trouble and it was an honest mistake on her part. Luckily, Smith knew just how to deal with the situation without making a big scene.
Joe Rogan’s Stance on They/Them Pronouns
Smith identifies as non-binary and while it is important that we do our best to make them feel accommodated in this world, there will always be people who will have trouble understanding and/or accepting the facts.Joe Roganseems to be one of them.
During the#2226episode, Rogan was joined by Theo Von when he brought up the topic of fishing. The host instantly remembered Smith’s above-mentioned interview moment.

Calling Smith a“chubby dude that dressed up as the devil,”Rogan recalled the fisherthem term and expressed his disapproval of it all, including they/them pronouns.
He stated,

What’s that fcking dude’s name? The chubby dude that dressed up like the devil and everybody got mad. He’s a singer, Sam Smith. He said he wanted the be a fisherthem. Not a fisherman, a fisherher, a fishershe, a fisherthem! The they/them thing, that’s the best evidence you need that people are out of their fcking minds. You can’t be plural, you f*cking idiot.
Not only does Rogan refuse to acknowledge Smith’s preferred pronouns but he also believes that using they/them pronouns is just an excuse for a“regular white person”to be included in a marginalized community. He also came for pansexuality and when Von asked“what is that,”he simply replied with,“exactly.”Well, to each their own, right?
