Now one might feel quite disappointed after this unexpected news, but fans should also be aware of the huge financial loss the anime industry faces for such illegal anime streaming websites. This might seem like a scene straight out ofGhost in the Shell, as the Japanese Agency is planning to incorporate AI technology to catch those slippery websites!

Japanese AI Technology Will Put Handcuffs on Your Illegal Anime Streaming!

Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairsfinally takes a bold step toward combating illegal piracy in manga and anime content. Even a significant cost has been allocated to this project, which is reportedly 300 million yen (approximately $2 million USD). All of it aims to develop an AI system!

The AI system shall be trained to identify piracy websites based on their structures, ads, and other content patterns. It would also apply image recognition of pirated materials of manga and anime. The AI will simplify the process for rights holders to submit takedown requests. As the Agency also mentioned,

There are limitations to finding pirated sites with the human eye, as it takes time and cost. We would like to develop effective countermeasures to reduce pirated sites and protect rights holders.

The agency will be able to automate the identification process and counter the rapid growth of piracy sites. This is actually part of a larger effort to protect intellectual property rights from Japan and ensurethat creators receive fair compensation for their work.

Even though this is a major step in fighting piracy, the flip side might also lead to some unintended consequences. As one might already know, pirated sites also hold a lot of anime titles that are region-blocked, so those will not be accessible to fans residing in certain countries. So, no matter what happens, the fandom will closely observe the progress of this project.

Massive Industry Loss and The Countermeasure by The Japanese Agency

It is no news that the anime andmanga industrieshave long been under a financial crisis as a result of widespread piracy. According to the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs, damages are estimated to be about 2 Trillion yen every year, or roughly $13.4 billion USD.

It was estimated that the mangaindustry lost over $3.5 billion for piracy in 2023 alone. This tremendous loss has put creators’, publishers’, and the whole industry’s livelihoods at risk. Fans should be aware of the extent to which piracy affects the industry and provide support to proper sources so that they will continue to give us quality content.

The fight against piracy is not solely restricted within Japan, as it has gone both for sites within the country and foreign sites. The Tokyo District Courthas already orderedthat the operator of the Mangamura site pay a little under $11.4 million USD to three publishing houses. This is an impressive victory that sends out warnings to the piracy sites, slowly starting to protect the rights of the creators and the publishers.
