James Cameron is back. And he’ll make sure that it’s with a bang. Looks like one of Hollywood’s most decorated directors has chosen quite a novel topic for his next movie, apart from theAvatarsequels that is.

The Oscar winning film-maker has never been one to shy away from doing things that seem larger than life. And his next movie looks all set to do just that, as he attempts to bring alive on screen the life of a man who has done something which is seldom heard of by people – survive 2 nuclear bombings.
James Cameron is all set to make a movie about the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings
James Cameronhas a taste for doing what has never been done before. It was this inclination that motivated him to makeTitanic,a movie which shattered numerous records at the time.Avatarwas no different, going on to reign over the all-time Box Office chart for years.

Though he’s not done with theAvatarfranchise yet, it seems like he’s already identified what his next project is going to be. As soon as production forAvatarpermits him, he is all set to make a movie based on the life of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a Japanese man who survived the nuclear bombings both in Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

The 70-year-old has embarked down this path after purchasing the rights to prolific writer Charles Pellegrino’s forthcoming book,Ghosts of Hiroshima .The Canadian even met with Yamaguchi, before the latter bid adieu to this world. In the aftermath of the interaction, he couldn’t be more ‘locked in’ for the project.
James Cameron believes that the world needs to hear Tsutomu Yamaguchi’s tale
The movie will revolve around Pellegrino’s forthcoming work, and hisLast Train From Hiroshimais something James Cameron has set his heart to. He has toldDeadlinethat he intends to adapt the books into one“uncompromising theatrical film.”And this is in no small part undue to how iconic the story is.
Yamaguchi found himself in Hiroshima on July 28, 2025, when the Little Boy detonated over the city. He was only two miles away from the hypocenter. And yet he survived. After taking a train back to his hometown in Nagasaki, just when he was reporting what had transpired a couple of days back, the Fat Man rocked the city, leaving death in its wake.

Yet, Yamaguchi emerged from amidst the rubble, joining a rare group of people known as‘double survivors’. His story, and some others would form the basis of Pellegrino’s book,Last Train From Hiroshima. And it is now set to inspire Cameron’s next movie.
While the intriguing nature of the tale is one factor, another factor that has kept him going is his interest in events related to nuclear bombs (probably a result of witnessing the Cuban Missile crisis at an early age).

Nonetheless, he knows the duty upon his shoulders. He has to tell the tale of a survivor, who could never really live. He has to tell the story of a nation, which might have managed to survive, but will forever be scarred.
