Despite all this international success, Chan has been quite candid about struggling with cultural differences.
Jackie Chan had doubts aboutRush Hour

Jackie Chan’s Salary for “Rush Hour 3” More Than 18 Years Ago Will Blow Your Mind
So, Chan was uncertain about the film’s potential because he couldn’t really understand the gags and punches fully. In a 2001 interview withBlack Film, the actor revealed how he truly felt about the movie.
When I made Rush Hour I, I looked at the film and I didn’t really like it. Another one of my films that is not appealing to the American market. I thought Rush Hour could do well in the American market, but I don’t think so at that time. At the time, I didn’t know about American humor. So when I looked at it [the film] by myself I was not sure. Then I return to Asia to make my own film and boom, Rush Hour is a big success.

He also added that the film’s humor didn’t resonate with his Asian audiences. Nonetheless,Rush Hourwas a massive hit worldwide and people enjoyed the chemistry between Chan and Tucker. Two sequels rolled out due to the movie’s success and Chan became a household name in the United States.
Jackie Chan tries to balance Asian and American audiences
Rush Hourindeed catapultedJackie Chan’sfame in Hollywood, but he had to maintain a balance due to his dual fan bases. His longtime followers from Asia expected him to do more martial-arts-heavy films, while Hollywood gravitated more towards his comedic timing and charm.
In Asia, because of the humor, we don’t know it or understand. At that time, I know that I have to make two movies a year; one for Asian market and one for American market. From that point on, I make one movie in Hong Kong and one in America and I go back and forth.

It is hard to make two movies a year, one for Asian fans and one for American fans. So now I am very glad because I am slowly changing my character. Change, not only an action star, but I want to be a star. So now, I am making movies based on acting.
Chan did try to please the viewers of both sides but the demands of his routine were too much. So he decided to move beyond his image of an action star and aspired to simply become someone who enjoys universal appeal, regardless of the projects they do, like Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks.
