During an interview, Schaeffer revealed the reason she wanted to helm the first two episodes, which turned out to be better than the opening ofThe Acolyte. Meanwhile, the series also improved one other concept it shares in common with theStar Warsseries. Here is what Schaeffer had to say about directingAgatha All Along.

Jac Schaeffer Directing First Two Episodes ofAgatha All AlongWorked Wonders UnlikeThe Acolyte

Jac SchaeffercreatedAgatha All Along, a spin-off series surrounding the titular witch played by Kathryn Hahn. She also directed the first two episodes of the MCU series, similar to Leslye Headland’s responsibilities on theStar WarsseriesThe Acolyte. However, unlike the latter, Schaeffer’s efforts worked wonders for her series.

During an appearance onThe Official Marvel Podcast, Schaeffer spoke about directing the opening episodes and revealed the reason she chose to direct them. She explained that the first two episodes had to juggle between new and existing concepts and characters. As a result, Schaeffer wanted to ensure there was a balance between them.

Selfishly I wanted to be like, fake pilot and real pilot. Like I want to establish both, cause you know in pilot directing what you’re doing is establishing the look and tone and vibe of the show.

Schaeffer made the above statement, stating that since the first episode is essentially a cop-out opening and the second episode does a lot of the worldbuilding, she wanted to direct both episodes.

In contrast, Leslye Headland directed the first two episodes ofThe Acolyte, which was panned by critics, primarily because of its poor worldbuilding, which left very little time for character motivations to be explored. As a result, Schaeffer directing the first two episodes greatly benefittedAgatha All Along, while Headland’s involvement did not have the same result forThe Acolyte.

Jac Schaeffer Did Justice to Another Concept FromThe AcolyteBy Not Taking It Too Seriously

Agatha All AlongandThe Acolyteshare some cosmetic similarities, with both shows beingdescribed as the gayest entries in their respective franchises. Furthermore, both series feature the concept of witches, withThe Acolyteintroducing a new coven of Force witches.

Meanwhile,Agatha All Alongis centered on Agatha’s coven, searching for the Witch’s Road. However, the concept is done far more justice in the MCU series compared to theStar Warsshow. During an interview withVariety, Schaeffer spoke about handling the witch lore in the series.

If it doesn’t have to do with witches, we’re not going to use it.

Schaeffer made the above statement, explaining that the tropes associated with the witches were instrumental in building the show’s core story. However, the writing staff treated the tropes with silliness while also handling the traumatic backstory with sensitivity.

As a result,Agatha All Alongfound a balanced portrayal of witches and did not take itself too seriously. On the other hand,The Acolytetreated the Force witches and their lore too seriously. Therefore, it was heavily criticized and emerged as one of the most disliked aspects of the show.
