The first step in shonen anime is the revelation of the main character’s aspiration, and that is how the story starts. Similarly,One Piecefollowed the same order with Luffy aspiring to become the Pirate King. That wasn’t all though; there was something more to his dream. It was a dream that defined this goal of becoming the greatest pirate ever. We caught a glimpse of what this dream could be at the end of Wano.

The reaction of the Strawhats told us that Luffy’s dream is surprising, even for his closest mates. Over the years, fans have come up with numerous theories on what this dream could be. Many creative fan theories have surfaced on the internet that align with the narrative ofOne Piece. However, there’s one theory we choose to believe in more than any other.
What Could be Luffy’s Real Dream?
After spending years with Luffy and tuning in his journey on a weekly basis, one would expect to understand the character. UntilEiichiro Odadecided that he wanted one mystery to last as long as the duration ofOne Piece. Even after knowing what matters to the character and how he functions in his day to day life, it’s hard to pinpoint what this dream could be for him.
“If you make it big, you’ll be the second one born here”: A Surprising Coincidence Tied Takehiko Inoue & Eiichiro Oda’s Lives Together Long Before One Piece Got Big
From aspiring to become the most wanted pirate to hosting the biggest party, fans on Reddit have come up with several fitting dreams for Luffy.
While all these theories make sense, one of them is especially interesting. Luffy’s dream could be something as simple as curbing World Hunger. Food has remained an integral part of the story from as early on as chapter one. Luffy is a simple and straightforward character, if he truly believes in something, that something becomes a non-negotiable rule for him.

A little bit of this unwavering belief in something, and what enabled him to get this far explains how this simple dream fits in with the other aspects ofOne Piece.
Here’s How This Dream Fits in the Grand Scheme of Things
The first time Luffy shared this dream was with Ace and Sabo during his childhood. Young Luffy might not have thought about this dream in noble terms, and it could’ve been something as simple as ‘I want everyone to know what great niku (meat) tastes like’. Over time his simple dream could have developed into something more nuanced after the experiences he lived on the sea. For Luffy, food was something that gave him immense joy as well as the power to exert his limits.
Whenever Luffy shrunk into a lifeless form after challenging fights, he would always ask for food first. Moreover, he has experienced how great food equals great pleasure because of Sanji’s delicious cooking. So, he has experienced how it’s both a necessity and a source of immense joy and pleasure. It could even be his love language as feasts are a huge part of any celebration for the Strawhats.

The following explanation might be a long stretch, but it makes sense. Not being able to afford food can drive people to commit crimes. When a motive behind someone’s evil deeds is something Luffy can empathize with, it’s bound to shake him in his tracks. Perhaps Luffy wanted to ensure that this possibility never arises, he wanted everyone to have the basic necessities and strength to make them equal on battlefields. This will ensure that Luffy can continue to move ahead without fumbling.
One Piece Voice Actor Mayumi Tanaka was Given False Hope by Eiichiro Oda that Almost Convinced Her to Look for an Acceptable Substitute for Luffy
With that, we believe that World Hunger could be Luffy’s dream which started as something simple and developed into something noble over time. However, Luffy is a pirate committed to the title so maybe a noble dream isn’t what Oda would want for Luffy. This leads us back to square one, leaving us to wonder what could Luffy’s dream be?!
