The Golden Globes have always promised to honor some of the finest works of the entertainment industry. However, sometimes the decisions made by them might not sit right with everyone, especially not filmmaker Judd Apatow. When he lost to Matt Damon andThe Martianat the 73rdGolden Globe Awards, Judd Apatow was not willing to let it slide. Why? Well, he rightfully questioned how a sci-fi drama with some comedy elements could beat the other nominees in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category.

The Martianwas nominated alongsideThe Big Short, Joy, Spy,and Judd Apatow’s romantic s*x-comedy,Trainwreck.Despite the other deserving comedies on the list, it truly baffled everyone howThe Martianended up lifting the Golden Globe. Calling it a “punk move,”the director took a dig at Matt Damon and his film.
When Matt Damon stole Judd Apatow’s milk money
The Martiancontroversy at the 73rdGolden Globes ended up changing the award ceremony for good. As a result, drama films with undertones of comedy won’t be allowed to enter themselves in the comedy category, but will rather be admitted into the Golden Globes as dramas.
This decision probably felt like a balm toJudd Apatow’s soul who was extremely upset withRidley ScottandMatt Damon’sThe Martianwinning the award for Best Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes in 2016. Of course, it was salt to the wound when Damon won Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, as well.

Seth Rogen is Grateful for Judd Apatow Saving Him from Tom Cruise That Almost Happened: ‘I’m generally a weak-willed, weak-minded person’
Later at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Apatow called out the ordeal stating (viaThe Guardian),
I got Matt Damon staring at me right now. After that whole ‘Golden Globe comedy’ thing. We only have one award Matt, that’s all we get. I’m like a nerd on the schoolyard and you stole my milk money.

Even thoughThe Martianwas one hell of a movie and will forever remain unforgettable, it really does not have any place in the comedy genre. Sure, there are some laugh-worthy moments in the script but to categorize it entirely as a comedy/musical seems a little absurd. Clearly, Apatow agrees.
HowThe Martianwinning a Golden Globe was a “punk move”
The Critics’ Choice Awards were not the only time Apatow expressed his distaste with the results. Before the event, he also called it a “punk move”on his now-deleted Twitter/X account.
He called the team ofThe Martianout for slyly getting into the comedy category as if they were afraid of the competition with other drama films.

The tweet read (via The Guardian),
Trying to dominate the comedy category when you are really a drama afraid of dramatic competition is a punk move.

He was not holding back, was he? But then again, Apatow hasn’t been one to hold back either. Last year, he came forTom Cruiseat the Directors Guild of America awards in hisopening monologue. From joking about his age and height to his ability to do his own stunts, the director came for the actor like never before.
