Following an abysmal run with disappointing shows and films, Marvel gave us a major banger this year withX-Men ’97. Despite not being set in the primary timeline, the Kevin Feige studio hit it out of the park with this one. With its mature storyline and an eye-pleasing nostalgic 2D animation style, the animated show established itself as one of the best Marvel projects in years.

X-Menstorylines have always boasted maturity and have earned praise for symbolizing real-world problems. The quality ofX-Men ’97also proved that the series may be a favorite for the upcoming Emmys. However, from the fans’ discussion on X, it looks like two other shows,FalloutandShōgunhave the upper hand over the animated Marvel show.
X-Men ’97is likely to face tough competition from some other notable shows
X-Men ’97, a continuation and revival of the 90s’X-Men: The Animated Series, flaunted a no-nonsense storytelling that was very successful in impressing both new and old Marvel fans. After 20th Century Fox’s bland take on the mutant group through its live-action universe.Kevin Feige‘s decision to renew the show proved that Fox could never utilize the Mutant Saga’s full potential.

While it will be exciting to see if the Emmys can pull off a wonder this year by nominating an animated show in Outstanding Drama Series, FX’sShōgunand Amazon Prime’sFalloutmay present a merciless competition toX-Men ’97. Both the shows were critically acclaimed and earned a massive viewership among the audience. Netflix’sThe Crownis also a potential competitor but most fans think thatShōgunandFalloutwould overshadow everyone in the nomination list.

According toVariety‘s final predictions,Falloutmay land 19 nominations while the Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai starrerShōgunmay end with a whopping 25 nominations. Interestingly, the fans and the experts also predict FX’sThe Bearseries to kill it in the Comedy category.

Even though it cannot be said thatX-Men ’97does not have any supporters, the show undoubtedly deserved more. While the positive critical reception speaks a lot about the show’s quality and also greenlit a second season, it would be a crime to say that Beau DeMayo’s creation does not deserve more.
The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will be aired on ABC on June 25, 2025.
