There have been several rumors regarding legendary JRPGFinal Fantasy Tacticscoming back with a remaster at Square Enix, let’s take a look at the leaks and theories so far.
Final Fantasy Tactics Remasterleaked in Nvidia leak
The first and biggest rumor source is the infamous “Nvidia leak” that happened in September 2021. A list of games possibly planned for the NVidia GeForce NOW service surfaced, and it included several Square Enix titles. Most notablyChrono Cross Remaster, Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster, FF VII Remake, FF IX Remake,andFF XVI.
Some of these likeFF IX Remakedefinitely feel like placeholders, but remaster projects like the FF Tactics Remaster are definitely believable. NVidia also stated the list only contained speculative titles; However, one of the titles on the list,Actraiser Remaster, was actually officially released several weeks later.
The Eidos Montreal play test survey leak
In late October, Eidos Montreal sent out a survey looking for players for a playtest, possibly forFinal Fantasy Tactics Remaster.The survey, in French and reposted onReddit, most notably asked if you’ve ever played various Tactical JRPG fromTactics Ogre to Fire Emblem.
It most notably asked if you ever played any of theFFTrereleases so far, including the PSPWar of the Lionsenhanced port and its iOS, Android versions.Final Fantasy Tactics Advanceon GBA, andTactics Advance 2on Nintendo DS were also mentioned. The survey’s aim was definitely to pick outFFTspecialists who played two or more versions of the game.
The Instant Gaming listing
On November 2, as spotted onReddit, French retailer Instant Gaming started listing “Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster” on its site, sparking new theories.
However, Instant Gaming is not to be fully trusted on these matters, and I know that full well as a french dude accustomed to the site. It’s very likely Instant Gaming started listing aFinal Fantasy Tactics Remasterbecause of the recent rumors. Not because it had its own sources claiming it’s happening.
At the end of the day, theFinal Fantasy Tactics Remasteris very likely to happen, especially seeing Square Enix’s record these past few years. Many iconic games have gotten rereleases on Steam most notably. WithChrono Trigger, or the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasterproject currently ongoing.
Could Square Enix announce aFinal Fantasy Tactics Remake?
It’s possible the “Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster” will actually be a remake of the game. One theory would be that it’ll be using HD-2D likeOctopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy, and the upcomingDragon Quest 3 remake.
The most important part would be whetherFinal Fantasy Tactics’Yasumi Matsuno would be involved in the project or not.He said in 2019he’d like to make one moreOgre Battle, Tactics Ogre, or Final Fantasy Tacticsone day.
