There have been some rumored projects that seem to be on the horizon for James Gunn’s DCU, according to the internet. There are some IPs that are said to be working their way towards the DCU’s official lineup, and it includes teams like Justice League International, The Terrifics, and Justice League Dark.

The Terrifics | DC Comics

The Terrifics is a team that was created more recently in the comics, specifically to explore the Dark Multiverse that was introduced in theDark Nights: Metalcrossover event in the DC Universe. The rumor about this team beating part of the lineup for James Gunn’s DCU indicates that the Guardians of the Galaxy director might be looking to adapt theDark Night: Metalstory as the overarching narrative for the DCU.

James Gunn could doDark Nights: Metal, but that would require a lot of groundwork

If the rumors for the upcoming projects in the DCU are true, then it can be assumed thatDark Nights: Metalis on the cards for the DCU. However, it will probably be a multi-year project, something that might take just as long as it took the MCU to do the Infinity Saga, if not longer.

However, defining James Gunn’s DCU in terms of what the MCU did is not fair. This does not detract from the fact thatDark Nights: Metalis an infinitely more complex story than other narratives that could have served as the overarching plot for the first few chapters of the DCU.

To begin with,Dark Nights: Metalwould merit the introduction of a multiverse, something that has already saturated the superhero genre. Further, after establishing its own version of the multiverse, the franchise would have to delve into the concept of a Dark Multiverse. Then, IP will have to look atall the corrupted versions of Batmanthat the story introduces, which might make the overarching narrative confusing for the audience.

This would also require Batman to interact with metals that facilitate the event, which while being a great worldbuilding opportunity, will require the Bat to focus more on Justice League problems rather than getting the time and space to flesh out his own corner of the universe.

The DCU might require audiences to be more genre-savvy

James Gunn’s DCU might require an audience that is genre-savvy and understands the various intricacies of superhero stories. IfDark Nights: Metalis supposed to be the overarching story that we follow across multiple Chapters and films in the DCU, the groundwork that needs to be laid byJames Gunnand other creatives will be vast and complex.

In order to justify the budget that will be required for these films, the films will need to spoon-feed information to the mainstream audience in a digestible manner, that does not overwhelm them, or make the story so unrecognizable that fans of the comics get turned off of the whole thing. The focus will very much have to be on taking their time to flesh out the universe and create a pipeline that is able to consistently deliver interesting stories while fleshing out the elements that are required for this particular narrative to play out in James Gunn’s DCU.
