Insomniac Games' upcomingMarvel’s Wolverineis targeting a 2024 release with a mature rating, says journalistJeff Grubbon hisGame Mess Morningpodcast. As the game is shooting for an M rating, Grubb reckons dismemberment may feature in its combat.

“Maybe the surprising thing for me is that I’ve heard two different dates… I’ve heard as early as fall 2024, which would be wild. Insomniac is putting out Spider-Man 2 this fall… I’ve also heard internally they’re still very much talking about 2025, so let’s not be surprised if that’s what happens,” Grubb mused.

“If anyone can pull off releasing two major, triple-A, massive games in back-to-back years, it’s Insomniac,” he added.

Insomniac’s Wolverine will be a different take on the character than the X-Men movies, with the developers divorcing the character completely from his cinematic self. According to Grubb, “They’ll avoid having any links or anything that evokes the Fox movies, they want it to stand on its own. I was trying to nail down the setting and heard it will start before he joins the X-Men, which also makes sense for a Wolverine game.”

Grubb also reckons Wolverine will be a semi-open-world game in the vein of God of War, rather than a fully open-world experience like Spider-Man. The reporter touched on the game’s mature rating, “I think an M-rated Wolverine could work, I think an M-rated superhero game could work, and this is probably the right character.”

Wolverine was first announced during a PlayStation Showcase in September 2021. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales creative leads Brian Horton and Cameron Christian are directing the standalone superhero game. Information on the game has been scant since its announcement.
