Rick and Mortyis one of the few cartoons that left a lasting impression in the minds of viewers, and much of it has to do with Justin Roiland. As a series, it is impeccable since it combines science and humor, making it a delightful watch.

Roiland poured his heart into this creation. He left no stone unturned to push the show to greater heights with each new season. The show has many memorable moments, given the different characters and their traits. However, one aspect of the titular character became synonymous with Rick, and the effort behind it might just be borderline disgusting.

Justin Roilandis the creative mastermind behindRock and Morty, along with Dan Harmon. The duo brought this adult animated series to life, and it first aired on Adult Swim in 2013. The series became an instant hit with viewers, in part due to the crude humor that the creators relied on so heavily. Coupled with witty dialogues, the animated series never failed to impress.

The show has several interesting aspects. However, Rick’s burping habit became a bit of a trademark during the show’s run. While it might seem random, and, at times, downright gross, Roiland was very deliberate about his acting choices.

Roiland voiced both the titular characters, which speaks volumes about his talents as an artist. Duringa Q&A with Gizmodoa few years ago, he opened up about how he went about recording Rick’s burps since the character is a high-functioning alcoholic.

Roiland elaborated that all the burps were real. To prepare for it, he would read through the script once, and annotate the areas where he wanted to insert Rick’s burps. Since he could not burp on command, Roiland confessed to drinking a lot of low-calorie beer and water before a recording session.

“The burps are real. While doing all of Rick’s dialogue for an episode I mark specific lines that I want to go back and do “burp takes” on. I have to tell the Audio Engineer (Daniel) to leave it recording. I use low calorie beer (miller 64) and water to get air into my stomach. Then wait for the burp and try to get it in the middle of a line. Its disgusting reading this explanation I just typed. This whole process is disgusting,”he said.

Justin Roiland’s performances were memorable. However, his stint on the show came to an end after several details came to light.

In January 2023, Roiland was charged withtwo counts of felony domestic violence. Adult Swim severed ties with him, even though he was later cleared of the charges since there was not enough evidence to establish a case. Even Hulu cut ties with him, buthe swore to clear his name.

The animated series went ahead with a seventh season without Roiland, whohad to be recast. Ian Cardoni took over for Rick Sanchez, whereas Harry Belden lent his voice to Morty.
