Hayden Christensen refused to accept the criticism for his portrayal of Anakin Skywalker in theStar Warsprequel trilogy. The Canadian actor has claimed that the audience who complain about the role just do not get it. Even though the George Lucas movies were box office hits, they failed to generate the same impact among the audience and the critics.
Hayden Christensen was one of the primary faces of the prequel trilogy. George Lucas claimed that he chose Christensen because he needed somebody who could embrace the dark shade of the character as well. The prequel trilogy showed the fall of Anakin Skywalker to the villainous Darth Vader, and Lucas thought theShattered Glassactor to be the perfect fit for the role.

Almost the entirety of the prequel trilogy saw a mixed reception to the role of Anakin Skywalker. The fans did not like the whiny character and failed to connect this version of the character to the menacing villain of the original trilogy.

During an interview withThe Guardian, Hayden Christensen responded to the criticism he has been subjected to over the years and said that the audience does not get the role.
“I think it just goes back to the sort of ownership that people feel towards these characters. It’s almost like public domain. These characters really do belong to everybody. I guess the impression that I got from George Lucas was that if they don’t like them, then they don’t ‘get’ it – and that was good enough for me.”
A large section of fans also pointed out that George Lucas’ direction and dialogue were also to be blamed for the complaints about Anakin’s character. The 42-year-old actor also shed light on that aspect of criticism. He defended Lucas’ dialogues by claiming that it is unfair to expect the people of a different galaxy far far away to talk the way we do.
“George Lucas creates such a unique world where everything is so specific, from the way these characters look and the way that they talk, and I feel like sometimes people lose sight of that and they expect them to speak the same way that we speak – and that’s not what we were going for.”
Following the prequel trilogy, the fans spottedHayden Christensenheading the iconic role again in theObi-Wan KenobiandAhsokaTV shows. Contrary to his portrayals in the films, his roles in the Disney+ shows were considered superior and significantly improved.

Ewan McGregor joined Hayden Christensen to defend the prequel trilogy
One of the other primary characters from the prequel trilogy was Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi. When he sat with the Anakin Skywalker fame for an interview withLADbible TV, he added that the prequel trilogy was liked by the targeted audiences-“I mean, not by the people that love them — [the people] that we made them for.”
Even though the performance of Ewan McGregor garnered appreciation in the prequel trilogy, the stories did not have a pleasing fate. McGregor described the movies as an unpleasant experience and recalled toTotal FilmMagazine (viaCBR), how the fans criticized the prequel trilogy so badly when it came out.
“[The prequels] weren’t received very well. Every time they were released, they were being hammered. And that didn’t feel very good.”
