First starring in the Oscar-winningTop Gun: Maverickand then getting quite a lot of attention for his role as Ben inAnyone But You,he suddenly went from being a lesser-known gem to one of Hollywood’s favorite new entries.

While he is turning into a household name now, it wasn’t too long ago that Powell was grouped among the other actors who were struggling to make it big in the industry. During a recent interview, the actor talked about what it was like for him when he was starting off as an actor, and also revealed a time when he was seriously concerned about his talents in the field.

After years of questioning himself, there was one role that brought back his faith in himself. In 2012, Powell played the role of Gavin Turner for one episode of the ABC series,The Lying Game.Although the series only ran for two seasons, it wasn’t very popular, and the actor’s role in it wasn’t very big. Still, this casting completely changed his outlook on his profession.

I am hyper aware of that. You never forget how people treated you. It’s why I feel this insane sense of gratitude right now. I don’t take any of this for granted — at all.

He recognizes just how lucky he was to have become the icon that he has in recent years, and continues to be grateful for it.
