Steven Spielberg and Other Directors Refused Offers To Direct the Prequel Trilogy

Following the monumental success of the original trilogy ofStar Wars,George Lucasplanned to make another trilogy exploring the past of the characters and the franchise’s lore. While Lucas would return as director, he did not want to necessarily direct the three films that were planned. He approached Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, and Ron Howard to direct one film each.

In an appearance on theHappy Sad Confused Podcast, Howard revealed that he and the other directors all refused to accept the gracious offer. It was a big responsibility and they weren’t sure that they would be able to live up to what Lucas was able to achieve with the original trilogy. Howard said,

He didn’t necessarily want to direct them. He told me he had talked to Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, and me. I was the third one he spoke to. They all said the same thing: ‘George, you should do it’ I don’t think anybody wanted to follow up that act at the time. It was an honor, but it would’ve been too daunting.

The directors did not want to be the ones to tarnish the legacy of the franchise and turned down Lucas’ offer out of respect for him. They believed that Lucas was the only one who should handle the franchise. Considering how divisive the prequel trilogy turned out to be, the directors thankfully escaped the wrath of fans at that time.
