Quarrels and tussles between celebrities are a common occurrence in the film industry, for one can often find some or the other celebrity butting heads. These are even more common when it comes to film sets and history is full of such infamous accidents when sparks flew all in the wrong direction off-screen.

One such incident occurred on the sets of the sci-fi bombRed Planet, starring Val Kilmer andSaving Private Ryanstar Tom Sizemore. Such was their animosity that Sizemore declared he would never work with theTop Gunstar again.
A Look Back at Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore’s Infamous Rivalry
The 90s saw the meteoric rise of several blockbuster actors and two of them wereVal KilmerandTom Sizemore. Having previously collaborated on the critically acclaimed 1995 flick,Heat, they once again met on the sets of the sci-fi filmRed Planet. However, their reunion was rather unfortunate for they infamously clashed on the set.
Kilmer was the bigger star of the two and apparently got upset after getting to know that the production had paid to have theSaving Private Ryanstar’s fitness equipment shipped to the shooting location in Australia. As per Sizemore’s memoir,By Some Miracle I Made It Out of There, this incident led to a shouting match between the two co-stars, somewhere in between Kilmer remarked—I’m making ten million on this, you’re only making two.

One thing led to another and Sizemore reportedly picked up a 50-pound weight and threw it at theTombstonestar (he fortunately missed). Things boiled down to such an extent that a producer told them that if they were to fight, they should avoid hitting or touching the hair and the face. And things did go there when Sizemore slugged Kilmer in the chest stating— I’m never going to another planet with you again. Well, needless to say, they did not work together again.
Val Kilmer is Happy He MadeA Ton of DoughfromRed Planet
The filmRed Planetwas a sci-fi action film based on an ecological crisis resulting in humans terraforming on the planet Mars. Despite its intuitive theme, the film just failed to deliver and was a huge box office bomb, grossing just $33 million against a budget of $80 million (viaThe Numbers). Not only were the film’s box office results disappointing, but even the critics were brutal in their response.
Val Kilmer: ‘We have a great deal of trust’ on Michael Mann’s Heat 2 That is Already Eyeing to Replace Him
As a result, the film is largely hailed as the reason why Val Kilmer’s acting career failed and his status as a leading man diminished to great lengths. Yet, Kilmer wasn’t all too bothered by the film’s performance and even described it asa fine experiencein an interview withIGN.
Everyone worked hard, and it just didn’t turn out. Special effects and all that stuff is good, but I’d rather play characters.

Part of what made it all a good experience was that he was getting paid over 10 million dollars in salary. So although the film failed to perform and was a terrible box office bomb, Kilmer was happy over the fact that they paid him aton of doughfor the film. So even though he ended up feuding with his co-star and his film was a failure in every sense, the salary made it all worth it in the end.
