I like being left alone to produce work that I can control. The experience I had on the second movie… I spent three months working on that film, and it didn’t really impact that film very much at all.
He soon left the project revealing how unhappy he was working on it. Mignola admitted it was his own problem and he had no good perspective on where the movie is headed. When he finally dropped it, he recalled regretting the time he spent toiling on the movie when he could have used it to produce a comic story that he actually liked.

The first time he worked with the veteran filmmaker on the firstHellboymovie was enjoyable because, at the time, it was still a novel idea and he was excited about the prospect of translating the story for the screen.
