During an interview withDC.com, Gustin talked about his training for playing a speedster in the series. In the interview, Gustin was asked whether he had to measure his calorie count for the role. While Gustin admitted it was something Amell had to strictly follow, he did not have the same compulsion.

No, thankfully I don’t have to do that. Even with what Stephen Amell does, what he has to put himself through, I just don’t have to do that. Because they want me lean for this version of the Flash. I’m going to be lean. It makes sense.
Gustin made the above statement, explaining that the plan was always to keep his character lean.

The decision to give Gustin’s Barry Allen a lean physique makes sense given the character’s depiction in the comic books. In the comics, Allen is known for having an extremely fast metabolism because of his Speed Force powers. Therefore, while Gustin underwent extensive training for the role, he did not have to bulk up.

During the same interview, Gustin admitted to undergoing extensive training for accurately portraying a character who can run at superhuman speeds. The actor revealed that before the series began filming its pilot episode, he spent almost 3 to 4 months training, trying to add the right amount of muscle.
Gustin revealed that while he initially tried to maintain the physique, it proved difficult for him to get in the gym hours necessary to keep the muscle. As a result, he quickly reverted to the leaner build, something he attributed tothe challenges of a rigorous network TV schedule.

I do a lot of pull ups and pushups while I’m at work. I run a lot for the job. I’m on a treadmill in front of a green-screen—harnessed. And it’s 10 to 14 hour days for me every single day. I haven’t had a camera day off yet. So that schedule keeps you in shape, too.
Gustin made the above statement, explaining that his character’s scenes already provided him with a good amount of cardio almost every single day.
