One Pieceis a beloved manga that has been going strong since 1999 and continues on its journey to this day. There’s no end in sight for Monkey D. Luffy until he finds the legendary titular treasure and the audience is endeared by it, wanting and waiting for more. The manga is so good that even authors who influenced Eiichiro Oda himself loveOne Piece. This must’ve been the highest compliment to Oda to hear this from none other than Takehiko Inoue, the mangaka ofSlam Dunkand Vagabond.

The mangaka has expressed his love for theOne Piecemanga, claiming he hasn’t enjoyed a manga like this in a long time. When you’re in the industry, it’s surely tiring to read and be exposed to other ones. But with a story as expansive asOne Piece, you may’t help but get invested and that’s something Inoue must’ve felt.

HowOne PieceGets Even The Most Legendary Mangaka Invested

One Pieceis full of moments that are heartwarming and hype you up, sometimes without even trying too hard. Simple scenes can make you cry and root for the Straw Hat Pirates, particularly Monkey D. Luffy whose good nature just compels anyone. His goal to become the future King of the Pirates is such an uncomplicated goal with a motive that is implied to be selfless and all about freedom. It almost feels like you’re on the same adventure as the Straw Hats and feel their emotional development along with them.

This sentiment was shared byTakehiko Inoue, who just happened to pick up the manga on a whim. What he didn’t know was he was about to witness the greatness of Eiichiro Oda’s writing. While the world ofOne Pieceis expansive, it doesn’t fail to deliver a concise and well-written story and Inoue compliments Oda on it inthis interview they did together:

I was in Los Angeles around the time One Piece started and I was having Shonen Jump sent out to me. When I read One Piece chapter one, I remember thinking, “Wow, this is the start of a really good comic.” I thought it was a can’t miss piece of work. I hadn’t felt that way about a comic in a while so I made sure to follow it.

The power Oda holds withOne Pieceeven amongst his peers showcases how interesting and unique the manga is. The reader can feel the loveEiichiro Odaput through the pages and that’s why it’s so admired.

The Legacy ofOne Piece

The story ofOne Piecepretty much covers everything. It has well-written characters, even the minor characters get a backstory and the women have personalities (if you can ignorethe insane body proportions). The plot touches upon genocide, racism, slavery, corruption, and going against an authoritarian government.

The characters also have incredible platonic relationships that are heartwarming. Their dynamics are complex but full of trust and loyalty. The reasons whyOne Piecewill remain in our memories are endless. If even the best mangaka agree, how could anyone else dispute it?
