Game of Throneswrapped up in 2019 with only eight seasons, and as much as we wanted to discover more of Westeros and explore more exciting storylines, the cast and crew members wanted to move on and pursue other projects – at least, that’s what George R.R. Martin thought.

The author himself wanted the series to go on as he believed he had enough material to cover five more seasons. Since his book series is not yet finished, there is indeed a grain of truth in his statement.
George R.R. Martin hoped for moreGame of Thronesseasons
In 2018, prolific writerGeorge R.R. Martinresponded to an interview as to whyGame of Thronesends with Season 8. After admitting he didn’t know why, he suggested asking showrunnersDavid BenioffandDan Weissas they might have some answers. Apparently, the author was not happy with the show ending with just eight installments.
While speaking withVariety, he jokingly said: “We could have gone to 11, 12, 13 seasons, but I guess they wanted a life.” He later on added that if people read his novels, they would know that there is enough material to do five more seasons.

He has previously shared how the showrunners only planned for seven seasons, but they were convinced to make it to eight. Martin revealed that there was a period “where they were saying seven seasons, and I was saying 10 seasons” but ultimately, Benioff and Weiss won. It was also for the reason that these guys were the ones making the live-action adaptation, and perhaps they knew the extent of what they could do.

Martin has made peace with the fact that the actors in the show didn’t want to remain chained to one role for their entire career. Still, the famed television producer got his wish to make more Westeros-based shows after HBO announced thatmultiple projectsare brewing at the headquarters.
House of the Dragonwas one of these projects that already premiered in 2022. Fans have more to look forward to in the coming years, such asA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,Aegon’s Conquest, andNine Voyages.

After watching the final season of the show, perhaps it was right to end the story given the backlash it received from fans and critics. The narrative has already failed to sustain its quality, and extending it for the sake of business would only do more damage.
