The combat mechanism of Honkai Star Rail is simple for the players to understand. By playing through the game’s tutorials or following the story, you may quickly have a strong understanding of the combat system. However, there are still a few things that you will need to gain knowledge about to excel on the battlefield.

General Overview

As a turn-based combat system, you will get to use your attacks on the enemies one after another. This also includes your enemies' turn to attack you. On the left side of the screen, the character who will attack next may be seen in order. Observe this sequence to determine your enemy’s turn and plan your attacks and defense accordingly.

Initially, the combat will not start unless you attack an enemy first. Again, if you go near an enemy, an alert sign will appear on the screen, indicating that the enemy will be coming to attack you soon. However, you can escape this by running away from the enemies until the alert sign changes into a question mark.

Moreover, you may find the health bars of your team and your enemies on the screen. You can also find the enemy’s weakness alongside its health bar and level bar. The elemental weakness and ways to utilize your enemy’s weakness will be discussed later in this guide.

The auto-combat, pause, and speed-up buttons are located in the upper right corner of the screen when a battle is in progress. You can use the auto-battle feature to let the game continue fighting for you without your input. The speed-up button will increase the battle’s overall speed by increasing the attacks' speed. The pause button is the most important button among these, as it allows you to retreat from battles if you understand that your team will lose.

Types Of Attacks

Normal Attack

Normal attacks are the basic attacks of the characters. These attacks can be used at any time throughout the game. These attacks can be used even outside battles while exploring the star rail. Normal attacks have no cooldown and also deal the least damage among all attacks.

Skill Attack

Each character in Honkai Star Rail possesses a unique skill of their own. You can use these attacks only during battles. However, skill attacks cannot be used whenever you want during battle. In order to use skill attacks, you will need to gather skill points by using basic attacks. These skill points are required in order for your character to have access to the skill attack during its turn.

Ultimate Attack

Much like in every other game, ultimate attacks are the most powerful attacks of any character. Each character has a distinct ultimate attack that is also their strongest attack. Ultimate attacks can be used anytime during the battle while anyone from your team uses their turn. If you choose to launch an ultimate attack while your opponent is still in turn, the attack will begin as soon as their turn is over. Ultimate attacks need to be unlocked by gathering ultimate energy. You can gather the ultimate energy to power up the ultimate bar by using more attacks on the enemies, collecting light cones, or exploring around the star rail.
