Once in a while, we come across shows that change our perception, and after years have passed and we revisit these shows, we don’t think about them the same way as before—at least one fan thought about Showtime’sDexter. The crime drama series has captured fans’ hearts worldwide, and with eight seasons and a couple of spinoffs, they certainly were in for a ride.

The story’s premise was simple and intriguing, and viewers were drawn to Dexter Morgan’s ability to juggle his two personas, one of which was his secret life as a serial killer. As fans, we wanted to see this side of him lose control as we’re intrigued by its possible repercussions, but it seemed like the show played it too safely.

Fan criticizedDexter’s missed opportunity to bring out the more psychopathic side

A fan onRedditshared their opinion on theDextershow as someone who watched it in their teenage years and now that they are older and wiser, and one of their realizations was the fact that they supported and rooted forMichael C. Hall’s character, who was a “straight up mentally twisted criminal.”

Many brought up explanations on why Dexter was quite attractive and compelling, and this was mostly attributed to the way he was constructed as a character. The show reminds us offamous serial killers in historywhose crimes were so messed up and whose redeeming qualities are nonexistent. But,Dexteris a fictional story, and it does not portray real-life crimes the way they actually happen. There are loopholes and inconsistencies, as pointed out by anotherRedditor.

This is also the reason why it’s nonsensical to even talk about what your opinion is about this character. It’s fantasy and unrealistic. They even get the science and psychology wrong. He’s not a psychopath, but more like a TV sociopath.

One of their observations was the show’s dependence on the DSM-5 guide to plot the character conveniently instead of exploring the depths of his ‘dark passenger’ and increasing his psychopathic tendencies. There were also times when he made dumb decisions knowing he was supposed to be an intellectual, which immensely annoyed many viewers.

For some,Dexteralmost felt like they could have done more with the character, but they took the more convenient route. There’s no wonder why there was so much disappointment and backlash on the season finale.

Michael C. Hall on Dexter Morgan not being a psychopath after all

One of the most popular theories on the show was that Dexter was never a psychopath and that he’s only acting as such because of Dr. Vogel’s influence. Hall toldVulturethat fans were “meant to be skeptical from the outset regarding Dexter’s claim that he’s a monster.”

As it turns out, he has a genuine yearning for human connection, and with Vogel’s study of psychopaths, Hall claimed that his character did not fit the mold. This, and the inconsistencies in the storyline and the underwhelming conclusion proved to be very frustrating for the audience.

Dexteris currently available to watch on Netflix.
