When it comes to Dwayne Johnson, the phrase ‘larger-than-life’ is no mere metaphor—it’s an understatement. The man has a magnetism that can’t be ignored. From Luke Hobbs inFast & Furiousto Black Adam in the DCEU, Johnson’s roles are a masterclass in strength and resilience. Let’s not overlook his charming Frank Wolff inJungle Cruiseor his heart-of-gold Mitch Buchannon inBaywatch—he’s done it all.

And in 2022, he added a surprising feather to his cap: voicing Superman’s trusty companion, Krypto the Superdog, inDC League of Super-Pets. What’s even more jaw-dropping is how The Rock landed the gig. No intense bidding wars or lengthy negotiations—he didn’t even break a sweat.
The director ofDC League of Super-Petsonce spilled the beans on how Johnson landed the role, revealing how this perfect pairing came together for Warner Bros.’ 2022 animated sensation.

Dwayne Johnson’s Krypto: Director Jared Stern explained the perfect fit for Superman’s ‘best friend’
Krypto, Superman’s loyal canine companion, is often relegated to the background yet critical to the heart of the Superman story. Director Jared Stern’s decision to castDwayne Johnsonfor areported $10 millionrole as Krypto inDC League of Super-Petswas not random; it was a choice that came after understanding the delicate balance required for the character.
James Gunn Got These 5 Things Right in the New Superman Trailer
In a 2022 interview withScreen Rant, Stern explained why Johnson was the ideal choice:
We went for Dwayne because we knew that he was going to be a great fit for what we already had, and then it just got better and more interesting as we went.

Stern also discussed Krypto’s personality, acknowledging that the character is tricky to portray. He described it by saying:
I think Krypto is a tricky character, because he’s cocky, he’s this guy that’s very confident because he’s got all these superpowers and he’s got the superest owner in the world, he’s Superman’s best friend, so he kind of flies above the other pets when we first meet him.

However, as Stern pointed out, there’s more to Krypto than his bravado. Beneath the surface, there’s a sense of vulnerability and fear, especially tied to the idea of losing his best friend, Superman:
But there’s a vulnerability, too, and a little bit of fear and sadness to him, because he doesn’t want to lose his best friend.

Johnson’s ability to convey both the strength and the vulnerability of Krypto was one of the primary reasons Stern knew the actor was the perfect fit for the role. The director also mentioned how the team could immediately hear the right balance in Johnson’s “voice”, which made it clear that he was the one to bring Krypto to life.
Unleashing Krypto’s powers: What the newSupermantrailer reveals
Thetrailerfor the newSupermanflick was recently released, and we can all wholeheartedly agree that the best thing about it was Krypto, the Superdog. The Kryptonian canine has been Kal-El’s best friend since his first appearance inAdventure Comics#210 (March 1955) and has stood loyally by his side ever since.
Just like Superman, Krypto derives his powers from the Earth’s sun, and shares all of Man of Steel’s powers like super-strength, invulnerability, super-speed, heat-vision, flight, etc.
In the new trailer forSuperman, we see the Big Blue falling to earth in a really bad shape. Battered and bruised to the point of not being able to move, Clark sends out a high-pitched whistle to call Krypto, and asks his loyal companion to drag him home. The snowy white pup, complete with his own red cape, hauls Superman home, dragging him across an icy landscape, reminiscent of theMan of Steelmovie’s flight scene where Superman first learned to fly.

The DCU film will be the first time where Krypto will be portrayed in his truest form yet, and by the looks of it, he has a major role to play in the franchise.DC’s League of Super Petshas shown how badly superheroes need their pets, and Krypto’s inclusion might just be whatSupermanneeds.
