Aizen Sosuke is one ofBleach’smost enigmatic and powerful villains. With his transformation from a kind-hearted Captain to a ruthless and selfish antagonist who could sacrifice the entire Soul Society if it meant he could reach the epitome of power.

Aizen’s involvement and multiple arcs in which he was relevant have consistently left fans wondering why he never revealed his Bankai throughout the series. It was mentioned very early on that Kenpachi was the only one who became a Captain without a Bankai. This meant that Aizen was supposed to have a Bankai as well.
Seeing even the weirdest, most unique Bankais become useful in combat, it is definitely curious that someone of Aizen’s capabilities did not find a way to use his Bankai to date. Even at his most desperate, there hasn’t been a shadow in regards to what it could be.

The Bankai of Aizen Sosuke is a huge mystery
Despite his unparalleled mastery of Kido and his strategic genius, the question of what happened to Aizen’s Bankai has been the topic of much debate. There is no doubt that Aizen’s Kyoka Suigetsu’s Shikai is one of the most terrifying in the series. So, is there a deeper, more calculated reason behind its omission?
WhileTite Kubo, the creator ofBleach, has never confirmed anything about Aizen’s Bankai, subtle hints within the story may already provide an answer.

Aizen is someone who wanted to sacrifice the entirety of the Gotei to make sure he could get stronger; he wanted to become a Hollow to become the “pinnacle of being a Shinigami,” a claim that implies mastery in every aspect; we should assume a Shinigami would have his Bankai.

For someone obsessed with transcending Shinigami’s limits of power, it’s hard to understand that Aizen wouldn’t possess the ultimate power upgrade Shinigamis have. Aizen’s planning and his knowledge and expertise of Kido are beyond most captains’ comprehension; he is a perfectionist, and he would do the same withhis zanpakuto’s Bankai.
Aizen’s Bankai was not good enough for him
The Hogyoku, a mystical artifact, fused with him, granting him overwhelming power and leading him to evolve beyond the limits of a Shinigami. Aizen’s reliance on the Hogyoku might havemade his Bankai irrelevantor, worse, useless.
The earlier conception of Aizen having a water-based zanpakuto and Bankai was an illusion. If a person such as Aizen his Bankai wasn’t perfect in terms of raw power or strategic utility, then with his pride and confidence, he wouldn’t use it. Showing a “lacking” Bankai could be perceived as a personal failure or a flaw in his perfection.

However, theabsence of his Bankaiduring pivotal battles raises an intriguing possibility that it couldn’t have helped him at all. Aizen’s Shikai, Kyoka Suigetsu, is arguably one of the most broken abilities inBleach. It has the ability to manipulate all five senses and makes it almost impossible for opponents to detect reality, and they wouldn’t even be able to tell when it has become an illusion.

This effectively makes it a power akin to a Bankai in terms of sheer utility. With such a potent Shikai, Aizen may have found his Bankai redundant. The lack of confirmation from Kubo leaves this as one ofBleach’smost fascinating mysteries.
