The socio-political commentary was an omnipresent theme in theNarutoseries. There was always a tussle to ensure the greater good or a desire to strive for world peace. As noble as these goals were, the path to their fulfillment was obstructed by vested interests.

Young Hashirama and Madara in Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto

We perceived theNarutoworld from Konoha’s lens for the most part, and the Hokage appeared fairly saint-like early on. However, as the story progressed the selfish interests of many characters began to surface.

The flaws in the way Konoha operated were far from fair, and while Madara Uchiha himself was no saint, he was also in some ways a victim of this convoluted system. Although his questionable motives were a huge reason why he couldn’t rise to the throne of Hokage, it was the unfairness of the Hokage selection process that never allowed him a chance.

Madara Beyond His Desire to Become Hokage

Madara always had the desire for power. He wanted world peace, but he believed that he could only achieve it through forceful control. His ideology was extremely different from his rival, Hashirama Senju. Madara’s idea to control the world was restrictive and harmful to anyone who didn’t view the world the same way as him. This was apparent to everyone and Hashirama was chosen to be the Hokage.

From there on, Madara went down the path of evil inNaruto. It wasn’t solely because people chose Hashirama over him, but he feared that that was how it was always going to be. And somewhere, he was right, as we get to witness with subsequent Hokage selections. Beyond his twisted ideas, Madara was an exceptional shinobi who was only second to Hashirama in terms of both power and experience.

He was perceptive and a reliable ally during battles. As a result of their extensive experience, and perhaps due to his own bias, he was absolutely right in his judgment of the rigged system that chose the highest authority of Konoha.

The Hokage Selection Process Was Always Rigged and Madara Knew It

The first Hokage, Hashirama Senju, was selected through a democratic process of voting. However, every Hokage after him was somehow connected to their predecessor. When Madara left the village, he believed Tobirama would be the next Hokage after Hashirama, and he was correct. Every Hokage that followed was either a disciple of the previous Hokage or connected to them in other ways.

What started as a democratic process became a game of connections. This is not to disregard their abilities and genius, but it would have been good to seeMasashi Kishimotogive us a more fleshed-out picture and an honest exploration of this system’s shortcomings.  Duringthe same discussion on Reddit, it was pointed out how Madara hit the mark with his foresight.

He could see the path Konoha would go down in the future. For how strong the Uchiha were, it’s a surprise that none of them were ever considered for the position. Whoever becamethe Hokage justified their titleby always prioritizing the village, and making the best decisions, even if it was at the cost of their own lives.

However, all these people rising to the status of Hokage seemed somewhat contrived, simply because they were associated with the ‘good’ side of the society.
