Gray Zone Warfare, an upcoming tacticalfirst-person shooterthat emphasizes realism, is set to release later today. Madfinger Games, the independent development studio behind Gray Zone Warfare, shocked fans yesterday afternoon when itconfirmed via X(formerly Twitter) that the game would be launching in just 24 hours.

Last month, a handful of content creators were given the opportunity to go hands-on with Gray Zone Warfare. While only getting to experience a limited portion of the map in a pre-alpha build of the game, many were positive about the future of the title. YouTuber Riloe, for example, summed up their short timewith the game as “promising.”

Is Gray Zone Warfare Cashing In On Escape From Tarkov’s Downfall?

Last week,Escape From Tarkovdeveloper Battlestate Games caused quite a stir in the gaming community after launching a $250 ‘Unheard Edition’ of the popular first-person shooter. The ludicrously priced edition not only locked a new game mode behind it, but also included “pay-to-win” elements, according to players.

Initially, Battlestate Games refused to back down on its release, but eventually went on to confirm that it would release the new PvE game mode to owners of the $100 ‘Edge of Darkness Edition’ and would also be balancing the items and perks included in the Unheard Edition. But the damage was already done, and fansblasted the studioby saying it had ruined its reputation.

So, is Gray Zone Warfare, a clear competitor to games like Escape From Tarkov, simply attempting to cash in on the controversy? Some fans believe so. Over on Reddit, one user respondedto the release date announcement by saying, “Everyone is getting hyped because of tarkov’s drama, but come on, the game got rushed because of this…Can be a very solid extraction game, but not now, wait some months.”

YouTuber MoiDawgalso agrees, as the content creator took to X yesterday to say that he doesn’t think the game is ready to release, even if it is releasing in early access.

Fellow content creator Kleanhas similar concerns. Taking to X shortly after the release date was announced, the streamers said, “I still feel Gray Zone Warfare is releasing a bit too early, especially after the recent play test. The devs do work fast and I know it will improve throughout early access. I just feel many of the problems could not have been addressed in this short amount of time.”

Gray Zone Warfare will be released in Steam early access at 6AM PT / 9AM ET / 2PM BST today. To find out more about this upcoming first-person shooter, check out its Steam page.
