At this point, I think it would surprise nobody to know that a newGod of Wargame is in the works. Since the series was rebooted in 2018, the two games have won dozens of end-of-year awards, sold millions of copies and receiveduniversal acclaimboth critically and commercially.

God Of War: Ragnarok Valhalla’s Story Hit Me Way Harder Than I Expected

Take it from a noob. This story-focuseed experience was worth the dying.

Now, two years removed from Ragnarok’s release, and six months on from the Valhalla DLC’s surprise drop at The Game Awards, a new job listing on the Sony Santa Monica Studios website suggests that work has begun, or is at least beginning, on the third title in the reboot series.

A Quest Designer With A Deeper Understanding

First spotted byGame Rant, a newjob listinghas popped up for a contracted quest designer. The listing, which is for an “unannounced title”, aims to be “genre-defining” and “character-centric”. And, while this alone could set God of War alarm bells ringing, there are specific requirements that further point the advert towards the Kratos-led series.

The listing continues, requiring the applicant to have a passion for “story-telling” and “world-building”, key elements of God of War; however, it also specifically requires those applying to have “knowledge of competitive products as well as a personal understanding of God of War games.”

It should be noted that Cory Barlog, God of War’s current director, is working on an unannounced action RPG, which the studio is also likely to be hiring for, but the inclusion of this knowledge requirement certainly differentiates this advert from others on Santa Monica Studio’s Website.

God Of War Reboot Series Release Timeline

The first title in the reboot series, simply titled God of War, was released in March 2018. Its sequel,Ragnarok, came out in November 2022, around four-and-a-half years after its predecessor.

We’re around 18 months on from that date now, so if we’re assuming that games in the series require around that length of time to develop, there are around three years until the next title, so hiring a quest designer around this time seems prudent.

That being said, with Valhalla dropping in December last year, it’s likely development on Ragnarok’s potential sequel would have been impacted by this, throwing any tinfoil hat timeline into disrepute.

Whatever happens, the game will take as long as it takes, and rightly so - we’ll just be here patiently waiting for the day it arrives.
