A legendary actor like Denzel Washington is worthy of all the praise he deserves. Along with his skills, his accolades prove the same. However, despite having nine Academy Award nominations and two Oscar wins, he has yet to receive a single BAFTA Award nomination.

The pattern continued recently when Washington’s role in Gladiator II was not acknowledged by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in their latest nominations. This exclusion from the 2025 BAFTA Awards shortlist has sparked conversations about the possible reasons behind Washington being snubbed from the British award.

Denzel Washington’s career is a legacy of bold performances

Since the start,Denzel Washington’s performances have been a masterclass for the audience. He has earned his place among Hollywood’s elite. Two of his most notable performances were inTraining DayandFences.

His role inTraining Daywas a morally complex and corrupt Detective Alonzo Harris. His performance was so iconic that it won him an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Equally powerful was his performance inFences, where Washington played Troy Maxson, a former baseball player grappling with the limitations of his life. It also earned him an Oscar nomination and further solidified his reputation as a legendary actor.

Despite receiving accolades from the Oscars, the Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild Awards, Washington’s remarkable performances have never been recognized by BAFTA.

BAFTA snubs Denzel Washington regardless of his outstanding performance in Gladiator II

Denzel Washington played the role of Macrinus, a powerful political figure who heavily influenced the events inGladiator II. His bold performance coupled with his commanding presence was loved by critics and fans alike. When his casting was first announced, people were excited to see him bring this intriguing character to life on the big screen.

According toVariety, they significantly changed their voting process in 2020. Fans are angry over his exclusion from the nominations as they chose to take the matter to social media.

We love Denzel. Some in the industry don’t.

Despite the changes, Washington’s consistent exclusion from the BAFTAs raises broader questions about the criteria used to evaluate performances. The other snubs of the award season were just as shocking. With amazing actors likeNicole Kidman, Margaret Qualley and Daniel Craig getting brutally snubbeddespite delivering breathtaking performances.

While the BAFTA snubs may be disappointing, they do not affect the global admiration and respect that Denzel Washington receives as one of the finest actors of his generation. This also hints at how the awards don’t necessarily prove an actor is talented especially when their work reflects their exceptional abilities.
