One of last year’s highest-selling games,Black Myth Wukong, was made by Chinese studio Game Science. The game was based on the Chinese myth “Journey to the West,” so it’s natural to think that the majority of the people who bought it are from China.
However, Game Science has revealed that a significant chunk of it didn’t come from the country.

Black Myth Wukong Finds An Audience Outside Of China
Speaking at theWest Lake Art Forumheld at the School of Animation and Games of the China Academy of Art (via80 Level), Game Science co-founder and Art Director Yang Qi mentioned that 30% of the game’s player base is from outside China. However, no breakdown on how many are from PC and PS5 was given.
This figure surprised Game Science, given that foreign players might not be familiar with or have any connection with the game’s story. According to Qi, even if players don’t understand Wukong’s design, style, and story, they can appreciate the core content and how the game resonates with common experiences.

How does this 30% translate to sales? In aJanuary 30 report by Nico Partners, it states that Black Myth Wukong has sold 25 million copies across console and PC. If the 30% number is considered, that means about 7.5 million game sales are outside China.

While most of the game’s sales are (understandably) from China, 30% is still significant. This means that over seven million gamers bought Black Myth Wukong mostly based on its gameplay, and without any political agenda or whatnot (since some are alluding pointing to political interference, which is why the game managed to sell millions).
Bear in mind this is with the Xbox version still unreleased. The latest update from Game Scienceblames the Xbox Series Sas the main culprit behind the delay.

Looking ahead, the studio hasn’t announced anything official, buta tease from Novemberlast year hinted at a DLC reveal happening in the future.
