In case you don’t know, there is a popular Japanese term used for a certain archetype of fictional characters, that is “Kuudere”! It describes individuals who are usually incredibly calm, reserved, and sometimes stoic to the point of seeming emotionless! And, Fern fromFrieren: Beyond Journey’s Endis one such character.

Many people, however, find this character type quite unrealistic in a real-world setting for how much of an introvert they would be in reality. But, Fern’s character has much more than just that, showing a level of depth that contradicts her initial impression of a typical Kuudere persona.
The time when Fern broke free from his Kuudere character trope!
Fern is known to be a pretty cool and stoic character, and that’s exactly how the narrative presented her throughout most of the season. She doesn’t really show her emotionsunless she’s throwing one of her signature pout faces.
But, as it turns out, there’s one thing that can still get her really excited, that even fighting against demon mages couldn’t do!

When that one-timeFrierenwoke up early, it was like a miracle in itself, as this was also something completely unexpected for Fern.

She totally lost her cool by that. She jumped up, beaming with excitement and relief, which was pretty adorable, to say the least. It was rather hilarious too, how not having to wake Frieren up is such a huge deal for her.
I LOVE THAT FRIEREN ACTUALLY WAKING UP EARLY IN THE MORNING IS THE ONLY TIME FERN HAS BEEN THIS EXPRESSIVE 😭pic.twitter.com/2DKcQkRl02

Even when she was facing off against the demon mages, she was still her usual calm and collected self. Frieren waking up early, however, that’s a whole different story. It’s nice to see how Fern has a soft spot for Frieren in particular and it’s a good thing she lets her guard down at least once in a while.
What makes this moment particularly significant for Fern’s character arc
Fern’s character is often misunderstood. She is not emotionless, nor is she bland. Instead, she is stuck in a monotonous life that even her adventures cannot seem to shake. Her time under Heiter’s care might have been comfortable but it was also quite uneventful.
That’s why her reaction to Frieren waking up early is so important. Ever since she met with Frieren, her life has been full of ups and downs which definitely adds much worth to her even smallest reactions.

Also, the fact that Fern seesFrieren as a daughter figureis also quite wholesome, which makes her reaction totally understandable. With this, she proves that she is much more than just your typical Kuudere!
Now one can only hope there will be more instances like this where we get to see this adorable side of Fern in future seasons. And it’ll be worth the wait to see how Fern’s character will further develop along with the story’s narrative. As of now,Frieren: Beyond Journey’s Endis under production for a second season, but an official release hasn’t been announced yet.
