Since the beginning of his meteoric rise to fame in the music industry, Abel Tesfaye has been known by his performance persona The Weeknd. Last year, Tesfaye announced the end of his Weeknd persona with a final album in his second trilogy, Hurry Up Tomorrow, that was released on January 31st to the masses.

However, music isn’t the only medium Tesfaye wants to utilize to fully flesh out that part of his persona and what it meant to him over the past decade. A movie sporting the same title as his seventh studio album has reportedly been in the works since mid-2024, withfans finally getting their first official look ahead of the film’s May 16th release date.

Hurry Up Tomorrow, A Window Into The Weeknd’s Mind

There isn’t too much known about the overall plot of Hurry Up Tomorrow, with the baseline concept revolving around a singer plagued by insomnia, slowly descending further into a new reality as his mind deteriorates. It remains likely thatTesfaye will play this unknown singer as the lead, with many fans speculating that the character is likely meant to be The Weeknd persona.

The first look shows both Jenna Ortega, who is alsoslated to lead A24’s ‘Death of a Unicorn’ in 2025, and Barry Keoghan in scenes, offering some sort of support for Tesfaye’s character in his journey.

Besides the star-studded cast headlined by Ortega and Keoghan,Hurry Up Tomorrow was spearheaded by Waves director Trey Edward Shults, ensuring that talent and foundation exist for this film in front of and behind the camera.

Tesfaye isn’t a stranger to visual content, as he was a creator and starred in the MAX show The Idol alongsideEuphoria creator Sam Levinson. The Idol was a flop, only surviving one season before cancelation. Still, there is hope this Tesfaye project will be much more well-received considering the people attached and the deep connection the film has to Tesfaye’s life.
