4Upgrade Your Folios

Folios act as the skill treesfor each character. By earning SP and upgrading them, players can increase the various stats and abilities of each character to slightly alter their play style or teach them better attacks. Synergy Attacks are also locked behind Folio upgrades, making these very useful to get as soon as possible.
As characters level up, they will earn more SP to use on their Folios, and books can be purchased to get additional SP for a specific character. Folios are only upgraded at bookstores and vending machines and can often be forgotten when exploring. Be sure to upgrade them and use all available SP whenever possible, as it can also be refunded for no cost and used to purchase other upgrades.

As enemies are defeated in combat, the equipped Materia of each party member will earn AP and level up over time. As Materia levels up, it will learn more powerful versions of its spell, letting players cast any level of that spell when needed.

Some Materria, such as Cure, Fire, Blizzard, etc, will need to start being leveled up right away to reach the higher level towards the end of the game, so use the whole party and be as efficient as possible with Materia.

Each weapon a character uses will have its own unique ability to use in combat. By using that weapon’s ability enough times, the ability will be mastered, and the character will be proficient with that weapon.
Mastering a weapon’s ability will let that character use that ability with any other weapon equipped. This makes it important to utilize every weapon found and master their abilities, as they can later be used on better weapons and only add to that character’s list of options in combat.

The linear sections of the game will offer the occasional bench to rest on or a bed to sleep in to restore the HP and MP of the party. While these dungeons can feel a bit more like a test of endurance, the open region sections of the game offer a lot more freedom to rest whenever players want.
WhileCushions can be used to restat any Chocobo Stop, be sure to first head back to a city or ranch to rest for free. These Chocobo Stops are also fast travel points, so players can go to a free bench, usually found in Ranches, and go back to the original Stop to get a free restoration in.
