In gaming, few titles have captured the affection of the players like Bethesda’sThe Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Released in 2011, this fantasy game has captivated players worldwide with its vast open world, engaging lore, and memorable characters.

Todd Howard laughed and discussed that he didn’t think players would be so attached to Lydia in Skrim

However, from the countless characters that the game features, one unimportant NPC (Non-Playable Character) has managed to capture the hearts of fans, and even Director Todd Howard is amazed.

The Enigmatic Appeal of Lydia inSkyrim

In aninterview,Todd Howardlaughed and discussed that he didn’t think players would be so attached to Lydia. In his thought process,The Elder Scrolls Vwas a game where players would enjoy exploring, completing quests, and fighting against many monsters.

When Howard learned that players really like the NPC Lydia, he was fascinated. He said:

Everyone got attached to her, but she is a generic NPC! None of her lines are written for her … we did not put the time into [Skyrim’s] characters that we do in, say a Fallout, and you may see that. I’m not saying there aren’t really good characters in Skyrim, but I don’t think it’s the reason people play it.

Howard multiple times said that Fallout characters are superior to Skyrim in every way

He further explained that the developers wanted to create a world where every player has their own story to tell.Skyrimwas not the only open-world game in the market but it took it one step further by not closing down the possibility for quests to collide.

You can be running 20 quests at once and we let them collide. Development wise, the hardest problems create the most magic on screen. You can be in town doing a quest and then two dragons can turn up and it’s pandemonium. Those are the moments I love the most.

Howardelaborated on the Lydia scenario and said it is proven again that gaming is unpredictable. While developers will invest considerable time and resources into crafting compelling characters with backstories and depth. It’s these unconventional NPCs like Lydia that connect with audiences the most.

Whether it’s Lydia’s loyalty, her empty remarks, or her willingness to carry the burdens of others. She has all the qualities that resonate with the players on a personal level. Players even often refer to Lydia as“their Lydia”and even cry when she accidentally dies while fighting an enemy.

As Bethesda continues developing new titles and expanding its virtual world, one can only wait and see which characters will capture the players’ hearts next. It doesn’t matter whether the character is a hero, ally, or even an NPC.
