TheFalloutfranchise isone of the best survival game series, and it takes place in the United States in the future. In this franchise, a world war known as The Great War devastates the entire world, and the United States is destroyed by nuclear bombs.

Luckily (or not so luckily, depending on what you think), Vault-Tech, a major corporation in the USA, created nuclear shelters known as Vaults to help save the population. These Vaults are a major focus in the franchise.

6Fallout 76

Fallout in Appalachia (2102)

Fallout 76

Fallout 76takes place in the Wastelands of Appalachia starting in the year 2102, which is only 25 years afterThe Great War. This makes it the very first game chronologically, and it follows a member of Vault 76 as they attempt to repopulate the country.

You will take on the role of a Vault Dweller as you work your way around different factions such as the Raiders, Settlers, Brotherhood of Steel, and Responders. The storyline will take you around various areas as you work to reclaim the wilderness of Appalachia.

While the storyline of this game isn’t bad (I may be biased, after all, I live in Appalachia),it isn’t on par with the other games in the series. Maybe this is because it was built to be an online multiplayer game with multiple expansions.

5Fallout 3

The Capital Wasteland in 2277

Fallout 3is an amazing game, and it was pretty revolutionary for its time. It takes place in the Capital Wasteland, located around Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, in the year 2277. This makes it the 4th game chronologically.

The game follows the child of Vault 101’s physician, James. James has gone missing, and it is up to the protagonist to save him as they travel around the Capital Wasteland. You will meet various factions and learn that one dangerous one, the Enclave, is back.

18 Essential Fallout 4 Mods For PS5

Fallout 4 offers some useful mods for PS5, but here are some of the best and essential ones that you should definitely install.

I think that, overall, this game does have a decent story. I believe that, for me at least, the fact that after everything the protagonist goes through, James will always die really just killed the game for me. I am always a sucker for happy endings.

Fallout

Southern California in 2161

Falloutis the game that started the whole franchise. Originally created as a spiritual successor to theWastelandgame that came out in 1988, this game takes place in California during the year 2161. This makes it the second game in the franchise chronologically.

The game follows the Vault Dweller, a 20-year-old from Vault 13 who is sent to find a new water chip for their Vault. Once that is done, they will be sent on another quest to destroy a mutant army. These objectives are required to be completed within 500 in-game days.

One thing that bothers me about this storyline is thatthe Vault Dweller is just a 20-year-old who is sent on this massive task by themselves, and then asked to fix something else. In the end, they are completely exiled from the Vault that they had just saved. However,Tim Cain did explain why the game ended this way.

3Fallout 2

Northern California in 2241

Fallout 2is a direct sequel to the original game and follows the descendants of the Vault Dweller after they made their home outside of Vault 13. This game takes place in 2241, which makes it the third game chronologically in the franchise.

The game’s protagonist is someone known as the Chosen One, someone from the village of Arroyo, the same village the Vault Dweller founded. They are tasked with finding the GECK, something that will help them with their water drought. Once they return to the village, they must save the villagers from the evil Enclave.

10 Places That Would Be The Perfect Setting For Fallout 5

With Fallout 5 far off on the horizon, we at DualShockers are theorizing the best potential locations for the next Fallout game.

This is an excellent storyline, especially with how it plays off the first game. The Chosen One is a direct descendant of the Vault Dweller, and it is so interesting to see what happens to Vault 13 after the Vault Dweller leaves. I loved being able to continue the story and learning more about pre-war USA and the FEV that causes Mutants.

2Fallout 4

The Commonwealth in 2287

Fallout 4takes place in the Commonwealth, which encompasses the city of Boston, Massachusetts, in the year 2287. This makes it the newest game, chronologically speaking, and it’s evident that the events of past games have shaped the Commonwealth as it exists today.

The story follows the Sole Survivor, the only surviving inhabitant of Vault 111, as they are in search of their son, Shaun. They wake up to find that their spouse was murdered, and their son was kidnapped by the Institute, a scientific organization wanting to make human clones. The Sole Survivor must travel around Boston in search of their son and a way to save humanity.

This game has one of the best storylines because there are so many different options for you to choose from. Additionally, whatever choices you make, you’re going to see the consequences of them play out. It is so interesting to see how Bethesda seemed to have thought of everything when creating this game.

1Fallout: New Vegas

The Mojave Desert in 2281

Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegasis hands down the best game in the franchise, and for good reason. It takes place in the Mojave Desert in 2281, which means it is the fifth game chronologically and occurs immediately before the fourth game.

The game follows the story of The Courier (the coolest protagonist in the series), a person hired to deliver a package to New Vegas, unaware that this package contains detonation codes for nuclear missiles. However, they are shot and almost killed while on their way there. You will spend the rest of the game following clues and tracking down the man who nearly ended your life.

This game is such an interesting game becauseThe Courier had absolutely no idea what they were getting themselves into when they took the package. There aren’t many games where you are almost killed at the beginning and must chase down your would-be assassin to figure out why they were after you.
