After years of piling up all the secrets, Eiichiro Oda is finally spilling out all the beans. The first arc of the Final Saga, the Egghead arc, may have been less of a fighting arc and more of a flashback arc, but it is one of the most important plots of the anime. The latest mystery that the mangaka revealed is about the Sapphire Scale disease that took away the life of Ginny. TheOne Piecefandom thought it to be a deadly disease, but it is revealed to be more than just that.
Eiichiro Oda Gives Insight on Sapphire Scale Disease’s Inception
During Kuma’s flashback, it was shown that he and Ginny worked for the Revolutionary Army. They were both doing pretty well, but unfortunately,Ginnywas caught by the Marines when she was on a mission. After that, there was no news from her. It was revealed much later that she was forcibly married to one of the Celestial Dragons and was pregnant with Bonney at that time.
She spent a considerable amount of time in the Mariejois but was thrown out when she was affected by the Sapphire Scale disease. She somehow managed to return to the Sorbet Kingdom and went to the church where she and Kuma used to stay and kept Bonney there. Soon, she collapsed and fell to her death. InOne Piecechapter 1103, Eiichiro Oda finally revealed that Jay Garcia Saturn discovered the Sapphire Scale disease.
He had experimented on several people before Ginny, and they all succumbed to the Sapphire Scale disease. But in Ginny’s case, she was infected with a higher dose which caused it to get passed on toBonney. Due to the disease being so rare, there was no cure for it. Sapphire Scale disease is Jay Garcia Saturn’s creation, but it is unknown whether he created it with scientific means or used his Devil Fruit powers.

The Sapphire Scale disease is one of the most deadly diseases inOne Piece. It causes a person to develop hard Sapphire-like objects throughout their body. After getting infected with the disease, the person can no longer enjoy the Sun or any kind of natural light, as it will spread faster and lead to the person’s death. Even if the person stays inside their house and in a dark place, they will die.
But in the latter case, they can live longer than the former. OnlyDr. Vegapunkwas able to find a cure for a disease when he cured Bonney through a stem cell transplant. He had knowledge about the disease and knew that it was an ancient disease. Eiichiro Oda revealed that Jay Garcia Saturn is the main culprit for such an atrocious experiment. He used Ginny as a guinea pig. As the story progresses, more might be shown.
Due to Kuma’s efforts, Bonney lived to the present day. He traveled to different places in order to find the cure. Ultimately, he did find it, but at the cost of his own life. Jay Garcia Saturn is a true evil, and his Ushi Oni power suits him right. Seeing how Eiichiro Oda keeps up his histories and mysteries will be interesting.
