Early development footage ofDonkey Kong Bananzahas been revealed, showcasing an iteration of the game that features a creepy tech demo, starring an iconic Mario monster with boss monster hands strapped to its body.
Donkey Kong Bananzabegan development shortlyafter the release ofSuper Mario Odyssey, with the intention of launching it on the original Nintendo Switch. The game was eventually moved to the Switch 2, to be available on a system that could handle its destructible environments more effectively.

Donkey Kong Bananza Devs Break Silence on Frame Rate Woes
Donkey Kong Bananza is the next big release coming to Nintendo Switch 2, but the game’s director has hinted that performance is less than perfect.
The developers of Donkey Kong Bananza have been interviewed on the officialNintendowebsite, where some very early footage of the game was released. This footage comes from before the time it was a Donkey Kong game, as assets from Super Mario Odyssey were used to test out the concept. The footage can now be seen on the official Nintendo Switch 2 Reddit, and it shows aGoomba smashing up a basic world.

A Goomba With Hands Was The Original Star Of Donkey Kong Bananza
To test the concept of a game with entirely destructible environments (as the developers clearly never played Red Faction), they created a prototype using the Goomba model from Super Mario Odyssey, with thehands of the Knucklotec bossadded.
The idea was for the Goomba to use hands to influence the environment, being able to tear it apart, use it as a weapon, and throw it. This would later evolve into Donkey Kong Bananza, with the ape able to smash apart entire chunks of the level.

Outside of leaks, it’s rare to see development footage of a first-party Nintendo game from this early in its production. There’s something oddly creepy about seeing the Goomba with hands pulling apart a level, in an almost backrooms/liminal space kind of way, thanks to an iconic gaming figure being trapped in an empty world.
