Diablo 4game director Joe Piepiora has revealed that the upcoming RPG will receive “meaty” story content every three months. Accompanied by the seasonal pass, those quarterly updates will be tied to new features and mechanics while furthering an ever-growing world within the game.

This information comes fromGame Informer’slatest cover story, in which director Joe Piepiora confirmed that the game’s story will continue with new seasonal content being accompanied by both paid and free battle passes. Those additional storylines will be tied to new features and mechanics that will be introduced in post-launch updates. Piepiora also said he has hesitated to use the word “expansion”, as it could give a wrong indication of their content direction.

Expansions will bring a larger amount of content than players can find in a regular season, but they will cost an additional amount. Although the interview provides a generalized overview of post-launch content, some players argue that Diablo 4 will sample the live-service aspect ofDestiny 2.

The announcement sparked plenty of debate on Reddit, with some fans voicing their concerns about paying a subscription fee for ongoing content. Though Blizzard assured players that seasons in Diablo 4 will be free and the premium battle pass is all about cosmetics, some players are worried that they will bring paid story expansions in the future.

Interestingly, due to the game moving a different approach, the appeal of Diablo to run the same dungeon over and over again to get better gear may disappear according to some players.

Some also think Destiny 2’s FOMO problem may end up happening with Diablo 4 as well. FOMO is a term used to describe the massive amount of daily, weekly, and monthly content, which encourages players to complete countless challenges to earn endless rewards. This system puts players in a place to keep playing at the risk of missing out on rewards.

Lastly, some players have accused Blizzard of taking out story content that would normally be in the base game to sell it to players.

Players will likely learn more about Blizzard’s post-launch plans for Diablo 4 during the next developer live stream on April 20, which will go live at 11 PM PDT on the official Diablo 4 YouTube channel.
