Deathloop, from developerArkane Lyonstudios known for theDishonoredseries, is a recipient ofmultiple awardsfor its brilliantnarrative and game design, it also has some of thebest charactersin a video game this generation. Deathloop is an outright thrill to play not only from a gameplay perspective but mainly because of itscharacter-drivenmoment-to-momentnarrative beats. The game relies heavily on providing you with a breadcrumb trail of information that slowly unravels the mysterious story of theLoopin the form of voice recordings, emails, and hastily written notes.

10Aleksis Dorsey
Deathloop does an amazing job detailing the exploits of some of the moreviciously evil visionariesand while most are rotten to the core,Aleksis DorseyAEON Program’s Chief Financial Backer is probably the worst of them all. Aleksis, a certified 21-year-old billionaire was also the head of a pharmaceutical company before the discovery of the Loop. During his tenure as the head of the company, Aleksis acquired the rights to life-saving medicine andtripled its priceshortly thereafter.
Aleksis joined theAEONProgramto finally exist among only those he thought were his equals. Returning to the Loop in hopes of conquering Aleksis' Wolf Mask party and laying waste to his cohort is made all the more enticing once you are aware that Aleksis let countless people die,just to turn a profitand to live forever.
9Egor Sterling
Egor Sterling,the brilliant mind to thank for the AEON Program, is an insecure scientist who appears to be struggling personally with those around him not recognizing his genius. In voice recordings recovered at Egor’s research site, he is often ratherparanoid and unpredictably violent.
In addition to hisdetestablepersonality traits, Egor is theFounder of the AEON Programand the reason the Loop exists. It was Egor’s exploiting of Aleksis, more importantly, his ability to acquire an absorbent amount of investor funds, to create the technology necessary forThe First Day. Egor is obsessed with the concept ofPsychometry,which is closely related toControl’sObject of Powerin that he believes he can learn facts about a time periodby touching inanimate objects.
8Charlie Montague
Adecorated video game designerand an egotistical nightmare person, Charlie Montague’s reason for attending Blackreef is one of Deathloop’s more unique backstories. Charlie hopes to use the secrets gained from the Loop to refine his games and improve upon his personal inventions. Charlie enlists Dr. Wenjie Evans to remove half of his brain so that he can use to it improve his game design processes and create a game master A.I.

The surgery ends up a success and without the part of the brain that controlsempathy, Charlie Murphy birthed2-Bit, the mediocre A.I. that assists in game development. And despitelosing all empathy,Charlie manages to find the time to be romantically involved withFia ZborowskaAEON Program’s Principal Visual Artist and Supplier.
7Fia Zborowska
Aself-proclaimedArtist and daughter of awealthy shipping magnate, Fia Zborowska is nothing more than adrug-abusingegotistical spoiled bratwho couldn’t even find the time to pay those who helped ship her belongings to Blackreef.
While her daytime job may be a supplier for the young and rich on the island, by night she isromantically involved with Charlie, even though visionary fraternization is strictly forbidden on Blackreef.
6Harriet Morse
The sole survivor of ahorrific plane crashand nowHuman Resource Managerfor the AEON Program,Harriet Morseis the island’sfaith-drivenantagonist. She amassed great wealth when her parents passed away at a young age and as a Wellness author. A woman by the name of Elanor was selected as Harriet’s guardian and eventually stole much of Harriet’s fortune over the course of 14 years.
With the loss of her parentsand the betrayal of her guardian, Harriet hasdeveloped a severe distrustfor all and has amassed acult followingon Blackreef. Her followers, also known asSeekers, follow her self-devisedTwo-Path Divinitybelief in one’s self and in order to end suffering one must ascend toThe Great Beyond. Harriet proves her distrust of others in that notes and chat logs indicate she holds secrets of her fellow visionaries just in case she may need to use the information against them one day.
2-Bit, the better part ofCharlie Montague’s brain,becomes your trustyAI sidekickin later missions in Deathloop.
2-Bit functions as an assist NPC but is also unique in the way Julianna and Colt can remember things between Loops. Colt realizes this and befriends 2-Bit after he promises to set 2-bit free one day.
4Frank Spicer
Thecelebrity archetypeof the visionaries on Blackreef, Frank Spicer is apopular musician, and friend of Colt, who wasdrowning in litigationwhen Aleksis brought him to the island as AEON’s Chief Recruiter. Frank came to the island personally seeking a cure for his ailing voice, damaged when he toured 85 cities in 80 nights.
A judge, jury, and executioner on the island, in lieu of a powerful Slab upgrade like the other visionaries, Frank requested that Charlie create aClassPassbracelet thatnegates all uses of Slabswhile attached to the user. Frank’s songs can be heard over the PA system when you are unUpdaamand the lyrics seem to imply a deep affection between Colt and Frank as well as the utter betrayal he felt when Colt told him he wouldbreak the Loop.
3Dr. Wenjie Evans
AEON’s Chief Scientist,Dr. Wenjie Evansis the sole mind behind the technology that powers the Loop on Blackreef Island.A brilliant physicistwho may havemurdered her assistantafter plagiarizing their work, Evans is also the architect behind theTrinkets and Slabsfound throughout the island.
Dr. Wenjie has submitted that she is the only person with which she can communicate effectively and thuscreates a rift in space-timeto allow other versions of herself to visit on Blackreef. When she finds out Colt and Julianna canretain their memoriesbetween Loops she becomes fascinated with trying to figure out a way she cando the same.
2Colt Vahn
Colt Vahn, the player protagonist andformer head of security at Blackreef island, was Recruited to Blackreef byEgor Sterlingto locate the specific location of the island. Once on the island Colt and Frank Spicer were in charge ofinterrogating and executingthose who were deemed traitors anda threat to the Loop. Colt isborderline psychoticas is evident by frequently talking to himself and hysterics may have been brought upon bybeing routinely killed over and overafter every Loop.
Once Colt truly understandswho Julianna isand what it means for helping him break the Loop to return tohis wife, he changes course to a more definitive, yet violent, motive. Colt’s motivations after he understands the nature of Blackreef and whatbreaking the Loopmeans for him and Julianna take becomeprecise and relatable.
1Julianna Blake
Julianna Blakeis introduced in Deathloop as a snarky pain-in-the-loop faux-antagonist early on in Deathloop. Subsequent meetings with Julianna only paint a moregrim pictureof who and why Julianna is who she is. As the unspoken9th visionaryof Blackreef, Julianna is enamored by the game ofcat and mouseshe and Colt have going on in the Loop.
She is alwaysone step aheadof you and her performance leaves you wanting to return to Blackreef even early on when not much of the story has been revealed. Julianna is thebest characterin Deathloop because she is the catalyst that keeps Colt, and you, on the edge of his seat from start to finish. Juliannahas a beef to settlewith Colt, and she has beenwaiting 17 yearsto do it.
