Quite unsurprisingly,Dandadancontinues to capture the hearts of the fans with each of its increasingly exciting episodes. One major reason behind its success is the hilarious and unpredictable presence of Turbo Granny, one of the fan-favorite characters whose antics have stolen the show. Through the thrilling conclusion of the first arc, Turbo Granny’s consciousness shockingly transferred into a Maneki Neko (Japan’s iconic Lucky Fortune Cat Toy).

Now this may immediately bring to mindBleach’sKon, who also lives in a similar stuffed animal. Here it seems like Yukinobu Tatsu has managed to do things right where Tite Kubo’s approach went wrong. With the introduction of this character,Dandadanmanaged to take the series to great heights of comedic excellence. But how exactly?
Kon Was Nothing More Than Just an Annoying Being Throughout TheBleachAnime
Kon is a modified soul fromBleachand one of the most annoying characters throughout the series. He was initially brought to life from an ugly stuffed toy that belonged to a spoiled brat. The idea might seem funny, but his personality as the stuffed toy couldn’t be salvaged from his highly repulsive nature. Throughout the series, his pesky pranks made him more of a nuisance than a lovable companion.

To be honest, the anime itself exaggerated Kon’s annoying traits to almost intolerable limits. The filler episodes also did not help much as his loudmouth nature was thoroughly consistent. In the manga, though, Kon is more tame and likable. It is a pity that the potential of how this character could have become something good was massacred through this anime version. In the end, fans only see him as that irritating nuisance rather than as a valued cast member.
DandadanDoes It Way Better With Turbo Granny
Turbo Granny is a greatly put-together and funny character that makesDandadanvery fun to watch. While Kon was always a whining, nagging, and loudmouthed guy, and he spent most of his screen time like that,Turbo Grannybrings much more value and some of the most funny character interactions in the story. She has both knowledge and wit, and these two qualities make her a pretty interesting and endearing figure who completely overshadows the anime Kon.

What further sets Turbo Granny apart is the actual integration of this character within theDandadanstory, bringing richness and depth to it. Contrary to Kon, who often felt like such an afterthought at times, Turbo Granny’s presence was so thoughtful and deliberate in the creative process of the series.
Her transformation into a Maneki Neko was certainly a masterclass approach by the author. WhileDandadanis almost half of its way for the conclusion of season 1, fans are now more eager to see Turbo Granny in action on screen.

BothDandadan&Bleachare available to watch onCrunchyroll.
