The artwork of Yukinobu Tatsu inDandadanis some of the best we’ve seen in the manga industry recently. It’s hard to replicate the visuals exactly but Science Saru has managed to bring the manga to life in the best way they can. No anime will be a 1:1 adaptation from its source material but that also doesn’t mean the comparisons between them aren’t going to happen.

Dandadanis especially challenging in delivering a 1:1 adaptation, especially when Yukinobu Tatsu has incredible attention to detail. Every panel has so much going on but comes together harmoniously. Science Saru, on the other hand, had to cut down a lot of those details, even sacrificing some fun references Tatsu has thrown in.
The studio’s usage of color and expressions gives life toDandadan‘s black-and-white manga pages. It’s in tune with the spirit ofDandadanand Tatsu’s vision but not nearly as detail-oriented. Both mediums, manga and anime, are incredibly hard to work with. So should their artistic visions be questioned and compared?

Science Saru Wasn’t Meant to SurpassDandadan’sManga
The Alien vs Yokai panel isn’t the first time Science Saru has cut down on several details from the original manga. In the previous episodes, the animation has demonstrated a penchant for not being as careful with a 1:1 adaptation and hasfallen short of Yukinobu Tatsu’s artwork. However, Episode 10 was filled with moments where the studio cut down on being faithful to the source material, evenavoiding a pop culture reference fromStar Wars.
Dandadan: Yukinobu Tatsu’s Huge Milestone Shows Just How Incredibly Crucial Quality Anime Adaptations Are for Manga Sales
The Alien vs Yokai moment, where Okarun theorizes that the Yokai are protecting Earth from a full-scale alien invasion, was more dramatic and threatening in the manga. The anime looked more goofy but the colors gave it the threatening aura that was present in the original source. Sure, it doesn’t capture Tatsu’s initial vision but it captures the message behind the purpose of this scene precisely.
Animation and manga are very different mediums of artistry. While the manga is a still image that can take its time and capture the reader’s attention, the animation is fast-paced and keeps moving. You can admire the manga at any point but the anime has to switch to the next frame in the blink of an eye. There’s no way a faithful adaptation can happen without sacrificing a few details and it’s a reminder how fans can appreciate both mediums for what they individually bring to the story.

Dandadanmight be more terrifying in the manga’s perspective whereas the vibrant anime brings out how fascinating the supernatural world is. Plus, no one can deny how funny the characters’ expressions are in the anime.
What To Expect FromDandadan’sLast Two Episodes
Episode 10 left us off with the introduction of Jiji into the story. It seems tensions will be high between the newly introduced character and Okarun for Momo’s affection, although most of us believethe occult enthusiast has nothing to worry about. Jiji’s dramatic expressions are what make the anime funnier in comparison to the manga but also leave us with the impression this boy will become the token comic relief.

The last two episodes are going to cover the Curse House Arc which will only escalate the action inDandadan. The Family will gain a new ally with Jiji joining their team. We can hopefully expect a second season and it will undoubtedly happen with its popularity.
Dandadanis available on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
