Coralie Fargeat has an unwavering dedication to her projects, be it her debut featureRevengeor the recent Oscar-nominated filmThe Substance. After her first film in 2017, Fargeat spent years on the script for the Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley starrer. She recently revealed that she was broke when she wrote the spec script for the film but still kept full creative control over it.

In the journey to achieve cinematic perfection withThe Substance, Fargeat sacrificed at least one major project. Fargeat was in talks to direct Scarlett Johansson’sBlack Widowduring its initial stages. Her efforts paid off handsomely as her film has earned five nominations for the upcoming Academy Awards.
Coralie Fargeat missed her big Marvel opportunity due toThe Substance
The Substanceis only Coralie Fargeat’s second film and she has become one of the prominent names this award season. Fargeat’s first film was the gory French thriller,Revenge, which was a particularly difficult film to sit through. However, she took things to thenext level with a body horror filmthat came seven years after her first film.

In the years between, Fargeat was asked to direct the less violent and action-packedBlack Widowfilm for Marvel. This update comes from a source who toldVarietythat Fargeat opted out of the preliminary talks for theScarlett Johanssonfilm to focus onThe Substance.
Fargeat was willing to make such a huge sacrifice for theDemi Moorestarrer because it was too personal for her. She shared with Variety that during the filming, she was asked to tone down the violence and gore in the film. However, she stood her ground, sharing:

I held on so tightly during the making of the film and the difficult postproduction phase, when everyone wanted me to make it less violent, less excessive, less gory, less frontal. I knew that I had written this film to be more than — or at least at the same level as — what I’m denouncing in the film.
Fargeat insisted on keeping creative control over the project, which led her to jump ship from Universal to Mubi to distribute her film. Universal demanded extensive changes in the film and Fargeat was not ready to please the studio execs. Fargeat holds no ill feelings towards Universal and she is happy that Mubi stepped up to distribute their first film in the U.S.

If Fargeat had taken upBlack Widowand got tied up in Marvel’s big-budget production, she would’ve lost her creative control overThe Substance. In hindsight, her missed opportunity turned out to be a blessing for her.
