The biggest advantage that worked in favor ofModern Family(for the most part) was its ensemble cast. Three varied families come together ever so often and give viewers a glimpse of their nuanced antics – it seemed like the showrunners had a goldmine on their hands.

Such a trope had not been done before and that too in a mockumentary setting. For 11 glorious seasons,Modern Familyreigned supreme on television and garnered a massive fanbase.

However, with many characters comes great responsibility. The showrunners had 12 characters to take care of, from their individual personalities to their arcs to show how they developed over the course of 11 years. And let’s just say that they couldn’t do justice to everyone.

Manny might beModern Family’sbiggest failure

The son of an immigrant and a businessman, Manny, was a character with immense potential. He was funny, adorable, and talented enough to make it big as an adult. We saw his childhood pass him by as he matured before his age and resonated well with the adults. All his mother wanted for him was to be a child and have fun like other kids his age.

A stark contrast to Luke’s character, who was the quintessential curious child, Manny was way beyond his years, acting like a responsible adult. People couldn’t blame him, considering the backstory Gloria often shares including the travails they faced being by themselves after separating from Javier.

The fact that irks fans the most is how Manny is portrayed in the later seasons. In fact, not just Manny but all child characters. The showrunners badly messed up their arcs, seemingly having no idea how to project their lives after they graduated from school and college.

Wunderkind Alex was shown as awkward around men and unable to keep a boyfriend. Luke was failing at life with no career prospects and a womanizer attitude. Hailey got pregnant before marriage and disappointed her parents.Lily was seemingly forgottenand treated as an afterthought as we barely got to see what was going on with her.

Lastly, Manny was left a blubbering mess, making relationships and girlfriends his entire personality. He was not doing too well artistically either, with Gloria blaming hersheltered upbringing for his lack of creativity. Manny’s character did not just portray how the showrunners failed to chart their traits and growth but also reflected on the adult characters aka the parents’ ability to nurture them well.
