WIth the success of HBO’s The Last of Us TV series, Sony is now looking to adapt more video game properties that it owns either to cinemas, or as TV shows.

The latest game targeted by Sony? None other than multi-award-winning platformer,Astro Bot.

Astro Bot’s Director Wants To See More Games People Can ‘Actually Complete’

Astro Bot tells game developers, “it’s okay to make a small game.”

Astro Bot Is “Absolutely” Something Sony Wants To Do

This latest development regarding the Astro Bot IP was revealed by PlayStation Productions chief Asad Qizilbash in aninterview with Variety.

Qizilbash shared that they are “absolutely” looking at the potential for the game to be added to PlayStation’s growing list of adaptations. No doubt incentivized by the massive take Nintendo’s family-friendly The Super Mario Bros. Movie managed to achieve, ending its theatrical run with a staggering $1.3 billion box office receipt.

So far, there are 10 projects from PlayStation Productions when it comes to adaptations. There’s HBO’s The Last of Us, Amazon’s God of War series, a Sony film adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn,a movie adaptation of Helldivers 2and more.

How does PlayStation Productions decide which games get the movie/TV show treatment? Qizilbash shared, “For us, it’s, ‘OK, we’ve established one of our franchises as a great game. It’s starting to get a built-in audience. It’s winning awards.’ Those are very early indicators for us to want to try and grow that franchise and grow that IP.”

“So we’re constantly looking at that. And I would say it’s not just sort of awards and nominations that drive that. Sometimes we have IP that’s just got great stories that a creator really wants to adapt it,” Qizilbash added.

9 Best Movie Tie-in Video Games

For every twenty terrible movie tie-in games, there is at least one that manages to be a pretty good time.

While I can see Astro Bot as a family-friendly movie, it might be a challenge to have a tying story for a full film, but what do I know, right? Whatever the plot is, you can bet it won’t feature a lot of gore, as the gamewas pitched to feature decapitation, which the PlayStation higher-ups rejected.

Split Fiction Sci Fi Duo

As long as the quality and care is there, I am perfectly fine seeing more PlayStation IPs turned into movies or TV shows. Speaking of TV shows, HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 is set to premiere later this month, and while it’s confirmed to stray from the game a bit,its “DNA” is still there, according to game director and co-showrunner, Neil Druckmann.

What PlayStation IP would you want to see adapated into a movie or TV show? Let us know down in the comments.
