Assassin’s Creed Shadowsis a title that has already been the subject of conversation due to the controversy with one of its two protagonists, Yasuke. Moreover, gamers are complaining about the game’s pricing.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage, the last tile, was much more similar to older titles in the series. Thus, it also received acclaim from series veterans. However, Shadows seems to be returning to the franchise’s formula, which includes RPG elements and a massive playable map to facilitate the same.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Will be closer to a title like Origins than something like Mirage
Miragewas a title that garnered praise from reviewersbecause of how faithful it felt to the formula that madeAssassin’s Creedthe series it is today. The title took an incredibly different formula than the one that became the new normal for the series post-Origins.

But it seems that Ubisoft isn’t ready to abandon its RPG-esque formula yet and will implement it again withAssassin’s Creed Shadows. In an exclusiveinterviewwith IGN, Jonathan Dumont, the game’s creative director, explained the team’s vision behind it and how it compares to other games in the series:
It’s in-line with the latest Assassin’s Creeds that we’ve done…On a scale level, maybe we can compare it a little bit more to the size of Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Assassin’s Creed Miragewas more or less an outlier in the series recently; it is clear that the latest titles that Dumont mentioned are the ones that were released since Origins. He also added that the studio has tried its best to ensure the game’s world is as lifelike as possible, as with most video game series titles.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Furthers the Series’ Identity Crisis
If we compare what is known aboutAssassin’s Creed Shadowsto some of the highest-rated titles in the series, they are almost spiritual antipode. The reason is in the core offering. While titles likeBrotherhoodandAssassin’s Creed IIwereaction-adventure, titles likeOrigins,Odyssey, andValhallawere much closer to RPGs.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Showcases a Hidden Connection to 1 of the Franchises Most-hated Entries
So, while some fans appreciated the series detaching from the action-adventure route and going the way of RPGs, there is also a fundamental problem with the latter. At the same time, it may seem like ingenuine criticism, but recent titles in the series have felt like they gave too much to explore and not in a good way.
It was almost overwhelming for someone to go out and explore every nook and corner of the game’s world, especially if they were avid RPG players. The reason is that if exploration in RPGs feels overwhelming, it defeats the entire purpose of exploration.

While many breathed a sigh of relief atAssassin’s Creed Mirage,it seemed like it was an anomaly, an outlier, and the studio might not release titles like that continuously. What do you feel about the current state of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and the video game series as a whole? We would love to know your thoughts in the comments below.
