Assassin’s Creed Jade– the upcomingAssassin’s Creedentryset in China– has gotten around three minutes of footage leaked and shared by multiple Reddit users, showcasing gameplay, character names and interesting lore details. The game is set to release on Android and iOS at an unannounced date.

The story has been confirmed to take place in 215 BCE (Before Common Era), slightly before the establishment of China’s Qin Dynasty. This is the first unified dynasty after the preceding Warring States period ended with the annexation of all other neighboring states, and victory of the Qin State, thus leading to the creation of the dynasty in 221 BCE. A historical event explored in the footage is Qin’s campaign against the Xiongnu tribes, with aims of territorial expansion and securing the front lines at fortifications that would later become known as the Great Wall of China.

The Great Wall of China (or the fortifications that preceded it) is shown to be a main battle location, and the soldiers fighting there are tasked with the protection of Yongning village (located in what would be Beijing today) against the Xiongnu who have breached the village. The player is seen controlling Dengling Bai, Juzi/Grand master of the Mohist, an influential social and religious movement in ancient Chinese history. The character is also using the jian, a double-edged straight sword that dates back to seventh century BCE.

The rest of Assassin’s Creed’s key elements appear to remain intact, including methods of traversal, stealth, and gameplay, but there seems to be a more dynamic style of fighting thanks to the use of Chinese weapons and support for touch controls. The detail that takes the spotlight here is the introduction of Wei Yu, a legendary real assassin who was referenced in the series before to have attempted to assassinate the tyrannical ruler of the first Chinese empire, Qin Shi Huang. This parallels the real assassination attempt by Jing Ke, one whose story was adapted in many forms of popular culture, and gives us a lead on how the events may play out in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Jade.

A point of note is that the real assassination attempt failed to take the king’s life, and he died later in 210 BCE due to unknown causes. But in Assassin’s Creed’s lore, it appears Wei Yu will succeed in assassinating the king and earning his legendary place among the Assassin Brotherhood. The king here is also a part of the Order of the Ancients; a recurring villainous organization throughout the series, which most historical antagonists are said to belong to in some form or another.
