Angelina Jolie recently gave an interview withDeadline, where she talked about her upcoming film, Maria. The project follows the life of the beloved opera singer, who revolutionized the genre with her talent, specifically focusing on the effects that her fame had on her life. With this in mind, one can imagine that the actress has a lot of similarities with her that go far beyond their looks.

During this interview, Jolie talked about how she deeply respected Callas. She explained that she looked up to her greatly and that getting the opportunity to play her in a project is an honor of the highest regard. She even went as far as to say that starring in the project was an “emotional gift” for her.
To be in the footsteps of someone you truly admire, was beyond anything I could imagine, and it was a gift emotionally for me…changed me as a person. It helped heal a part of me.

Afterward, Jolie explained that playing her in the film was also deeply impactful on her psyche. So much so that she explained that the role fundamentally changed and healed her as a person.

Later in the interview,Angelina Jolietalked about how the process of playing Maria Callas was deeply emotional for her, and this wasn’t always positive. Considering the conflicts she went through during her divorce fromBrad Pitt, one can make the assumption that parts of her experiences still haunt the actress.
With this in mind, Jolie explained that she could not fully explain why the role made her so emotional, with the matters being too personal for her. However, she did reveal how her experiences on set drastically changed as production went on. She mentioned that on her first day on set, she was extremely fragile, being unable to breathe and crying a lot.

In some ways I can’t tell you, It would be too personal to explain. But from that first day [on set] not being able to breathe and crying to singing at the top of my lungs at La Scala, Milan, those moments changed me.

However, since she was playing an opera singer and singing one’s heart out can often be therapeutic, the actress had a similar experience. She explained that she was able to heal through the process of playing the icon.
